myevilme
So I went to my new pdoc for the second time today. He is a good guy and seems to know his stuff. I've been on 10mg of zyprexa for a while now and developed pre-diabetes, my blood sugar was like 120mg when I first got tested. I went back and only had to to a finger-prick today and my levels are about 110, so it's better. Diet and exercise sure suck though and I'm not very good at sticking with it. Anyway, back to topic, he upped my dose to 15mg and I'm worried that it's going to make things worse. We got into a little argument about me staying on zyprexa, I want off of it in hopes of getting blood sugar under control, but he went though the long list of meds we tried and I don't seem to have many options left as for what works. He thinks that if I stick to my diet and exercise plan I should be able to manage fine, but it just adds to my anxiety that I could possibly develop type 2 diabetes. Has anyone else on here had this effect with zyprexa and has it gone away when you discontinue the drug, or once you develop it does it stick with you wether your on meds or not. Ugh, I had more questions but my klonopin is kicking in and my mind is getting a little foggy. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else on here had any experiences like this. I'd hate to quit a med that's working, but I don't want diabetes. UGH.
crazynotstupid
Well--speaking from the viewpoint of a Type I diabetic, while on Zyprexa for 2 weeks at 10 mg, my blood sugars went rather wonky--i.e., I needed sometimes twice the insuling to make them go down. At 5 mg (which I'm at now) the effects seems to have gone away. And, this only after a few days. So, I would think any effect from the Zyprexa is temporary; however, developing Type II diabetes may be another matter. I'm not clear about the early stages, and whether you could reverse them by going off or lowering Zyprexa once you hit the 130 mark (ha, I'd kill for a reading of 130 most days). However, I CAN say that it's logical that even if your b.s. (heh, I love saying that) level goes above 130, and you get tagged as diabetic, if you were to change/eliminate the Zyprexa and your b.s (ha!) goes back to normal levels...then, you would, I think, be de facto... not a diabetic. Anyway, all I really know is that Zyprexa can, indeed, mess up the blood sugar.

StrungOutOnLife
The study is floating around somewhere. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/...50920074954.htm <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I read that a while back. It was interesting to hear that about the movement symptoms, given that the newer ones are supposed to be selective for the limbic system instead of hitting all things dopiminergic.
