I just started taking Lamictal and I felt the effects on the first day

Recommended Posts

It did not seem at all like a placebo, I litterly went from being moderately depressed to stable. I could feel the fog clear out of my head. I was in the middle of a session with my social worker when this happened, and she noticed the difference, but was only aware of the Lamictal when I told her.

Lamictal can kick in fast. Don't be too surprised or disappointed if you get a few ups and downs though - the titration can be rocky at the lower doses. Even titrating at the higher doses, I get a lot of better, worse, better, worse.

I've started taking it recently and currently on 100mg and take half in the morning, and half when I go to bed. I feel like I started to feel the effects in the first week, but it has been up and down for me, although in general I think it's having a positive effect and I haven't noticed any side effects, apart from a decrease in appetite which can only be a good thing considering I put on heaps of weight on other mood stabilisers!

I'm glad for you! I just started taking it a week ago (50 mg at night) and all I've noticed is a rapid heartbeat and loss of balance. No real mood changes yet. However my dose is pretty low and I've been difficult to medicate in the past. Glad it's working out for you and I hope it continues to!

I take lamictal 100mg in the morning and again at night. That's the way it's prescribed by my doc.

JaneDoe? Please ask your doc before changing how you take your meds.

Jericko… that's pretty awesome that you're getting such a good (and fast) result from lamictal. I'll second what others have said here… which is… don't be surprised or disappointed if you still bounce up and down somewhere along your journey.

The first thing I noticed lamictal helped me with is… that within the first week or two the outrageous racing thoughts I was plagued with seemed to settle down into something more manageable. As I titrated up to therapeutic level, it seemed as if the disabling depression lifted somewhat. Like I had been living BELOW the floor before lamictal and then ON the floor after I started lamictal. I had been so low functioning for so long before that simple things like getting dressed were still hard. But the difference on meds was that I could force myself into doing it.

I still have ups and downs. And honestly it worries me sometimes. But I kind of look at it like any other type of "recovery". There's no magic fix. The "work" part of recovery is still mine to do. So if it's "work" to get dressed and function in this world, then it's my job to man up every single time I'm able to. And if it's "work" to make myself go to bed at a reasonable time because I'm all ramped up, then it's my job to try. I'm not gonna be perfect at this thing called functioning normal… but I'm sure as hell gonna try.

The way my doc described what lamictal does… is that … even though the highs and lows may still happen. The lamictal may help the duration of a cycle to be shorter and less intense. So far that seems to be true.

I felt an effect after the 4th day of taking 25mg.  It started out feeling really good, then degenerated into a headache that was cured by taking aspirin.  I am now on the 5th day of 50mg and feel no more headaches, just the good feeling.  I am Bipolar I, and this medicine seems to be really effective at treating depression.  I would recommend it to anyone if they can stick through the headaches.
