Can antipsychotics remove thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Okay I posted my story in the introduction section of the forum and it seems no one was able to give me a diagnosis on my symptoms.... Since then, I no longer care about the diagnosis because I just want to really get better. My "illness" has severely affected my life and I just want to move forward.

Anyway I was wondering, can taking antipsychotics remove thoughts?? I have suicidal thoughts along with some other thoughts that you can read here... http://ehealthforum.com/health/drug-induced-anxiety-mental-disorder-help-t306423.html

I was prescribed zyprexa and took it for 6 days but when my ears started ringing 24/7 I weaned off it within 2 days. My last dose I took was the November 7th. And my ears are still ringing and it is now November 18. Actually its more like a light static sound. But with all these side effects from these pills I'm scared to move forward. And even though I am currently on no pills and was on no pills before the Zyprexa, my symptoms began fading anyway. I just want to know can these antipsychotics or even the antidepressants, or lithium or whatever remove these thoughts that Im having??

We don't do diagnosing here, we leave that to the professionals.

Did a psychiatrist or a general doctor prescribe you the zyprexa? Do they know you're no longer taking it? Any meds that you take will have some side effects to them. There's not really a way around that. And I'm reasonably positive that none of the meds will 'remove' thoughts. They help bring symptoms under control. If you're still worried, go back to your doctor and explain, maybe print out what you've posted and bring it. Therapy would also probably do some good, to help you learn how to handle the suicidal thoughts.

Medication can help stop suicidal thoughts, but medication is not intended to act as a chemical lobotomy to 'remove' thoughts. I hope you took yourself off Zyprexa in consultation with your doctor.

Also, we don't diagnose here. We are a peer-support site.

I agree with the others, that the term remove isn't quite right, but that some meds can help diminish intrusive thoughts. I've found that when my symptoms are under control, my thinking is more clear and I have less of a problem with thoughts that just won't go away. Once I got to a therapeutic dose of lithium, my thoughts of suicide basically disappeared-- so that is one instance in which it felt like the thoughts were "removed" because they had been so persistent before that. My antipsychotic also helps control intrusive thoughts.

As the other said, it is best to work with a professional to find medication that you can tolerate that helps your symptoms.

Yes, medications can "help" with these thoughts, would be the way I would term it. I know lithium has helped with my suicidal and anxiety thoughts though I need to give it a little more time but yes, the meds can help. If you were having trouble with the zyprexa, I'd suggest consulting with your doc about what to try next.

I'm with all the others here. This is something that you need to discuss with your pdoc.

I originally went on my AP because I was experiencing thought control (intrusive thoughts that weren't my own) and wanted something to block it out. It worked. But I would say that the result is that I am now more able (mostly) to think clearly. I don't think that 'remove' is a particularly good term here, like has been said already. The other effects that I've had are a massive reduction in the intensity of my delusions which also reduced my anxiety quite a lot, and a decent night's sleep every night which stops me from hallucinating.

But to summarise all that, I would say that I think more clearly than I did off meds. I have no fewer thoughts but the thoughts I do have are generally more relevant to the situation.

But everyone's experience will be different. You have to work with your pdoc to find a med that suits you.
