pomme de guerre
Hi all, I was diagnosed recently with pure-O OCD and my pdoc has suggested we try Zoloft. I was open to it so we're trying a low dose and moving up slowly since I'm new to meds. I'm optimistic but wondering if anybody here has any experience with it and would be willing to share, particularly about side effects? I'm also wondering about how strongly alcohol is counterindicated since I've had differing answers. I'm certainly not a big drinker and don't like drinking to excess anyway, but I am interested in craft beer and homebrewing; I'm hoping I don't have to give that up entirely. Thanks. andie
zoloft is excellent. i've been on it for six months (150mgs) and it's worked wonders for me. if you're not planning on hosting any keggers soon, then you'll be fine. i try to stay under one drink a week just to be safe but zoloft makes alcohol hit you a lot harder. i don't have any sort of experience with OCD but my step mother has it. she says doctors usually give a tiny or a huge dose of antidepressants to treat OCD. why? nobody knows....! Oh that's good to hear. I know SSRIs and meds like them are pretty much specific to the individual taking them but hearing positive things is nice. (The first few days on Zoloft -- even the low dose I'm on -- have been a little funky. Hopefully that will level off.)
hallowedink
Everyone is affected differently by anti-depressants. Just because you had that experience, Andie, doesn't mean everyone will. To the OP: At the moment, there is research into higher doses of ADs helping with OCD. It will very much depend on your doctor. In my experience,(which is specific to my area of the UK), prescribing higher doses is common practice. I haven't taken Zoloft, I'm afraid, so I can't warn you as to what side effects you may or my not have. And of course I have no idea whether it will work for you. My advice is to give it a try. You can always come off it again and go on something else if it doesn't work. For me personally, the only AD that has affected my anxiety and OCD is Wellbutrin, but that's no guarantee that it'll work the same way for you. Anna
I've taken zoloft. It can be a bit of a rough start up. Some people find it excellent, others need something different. For some it can be rather calming, for others more activating. It's going to be a little hard to tell. You're going to have to give it a good 12 weeks like most SSRIs, to really feel the full effects. But if it's not for you, don't worry, you have lots of different options. chimpmaster
Drinking in moderation whilst on zoloft should be fine. Hell I know several people on zoloft who drink heavily, without any problems. Not to say I recommend you drink heavily. Take it easy, especially at first, as sari's like zoloft can increase the effects of alcohol, especially at first whilst you are building tolerance to them. That said,, a few drinks here and there shouldn't be a problem.
