Another bipolar bear
I am just wondering what is a normal dose of Lorazepam is? I am on 2 mg prn. I was only taking 1mg prn but i didn't find it did anything so they upped it to 2mg, but my doctor told me that's a high dose and i should be falling asleep at that dose but it barely touches me and is like i never took anything. Any ideas on whats going on? Should i be asleep at 2mg? What should i see happen with 1 or 2 mg?
muriel
There is no "should." Everyone reacts to meds differently. 2mg is a relatively high dose at one time for lorazepam-- most people take .5 or 1mg at a time. It's not uheard of, though. It may just not work for you for whatever reason. Another benzo may work better at an equivalent dose or benzos might not be the meds to treat what you're treating. What symptoms are you trying to address with the lorazepam? The sedation/sleepiness side effect of benzos wears off quickly for a lot of people, which is why they aren't the best sleep meds. Another bipolar bear
Its meant to help when i get distressed from my experiences (psychosis) but i don't notice much change, well it doesn't make it go away, though others around me have said they noticed it does calm me down, some anyway. jt07
It's not an antipsychotic so it will at most calm you down some. If other people are saying that it makes you calmer, then it's probably doing its job. I've found that benzos are generally mild except for those that are used as hypnotics. You might want to talk to your doctor about a different PRN drug. Perhaps an antipsychotic could be used PRN for your symptoms. But your doctor will have to determine that. You should be clear to your doctor exactly what symptoms you want the PRN med to take care of. Lorazapam, for the most part, will only help ease anxiety. chimpmaster
Have you tried other benzos? Xanax (short duration) and Clonazepam/Diazepam (long duration) may work better for you than Lorazepam. Tell your dr the Lorazepam isn't working and you would like to try one of the others from the same group.
Another bipolar bear
No i haven't tried any other benzos i am new to them completely. I will ask my pdoc and see what they say, i am just keen to come off them as don't think they do much and i don't want to get addicted.
HAL9000
I think in general people metabolize drugs at a different rate. For me it takes the max dose of a number of drugs for them to have a proper effect. I'm going to ask my doc to up the Valium from 1 2mg PRN to the next higher dose which I think it the 5mg tab and do 1/2 to 1. The doc will probably say no but? I guess if it doesn't work the doc may suggest some kind of alternative.
