Cinnamon
Hi, my pdoc just added Remeron to my cocktail in order to quiet my OCD thoughts a bit more, but I'm really scared because I used to have AN and weight gain is still a huge concern for me, and I've heard that a lot of people gain weight on this drug. Does anyone know if the weight gain is the result of eating more or of a slowed metabolism? I don't find myself eating more, thankfully, so I would think I am maintaining my weight unless the drug has changed my metabolism. Thoughts? motori
Hi, Ive only been on Remeron for 10 days (30mgs daily), so there are probably people out there who can give you a more experienced opinion. Remeron has kicked in really fast for me. If it keeps working like this, I plan on sticking with it for as long as possible. Personally, I have noticed an overall physical stimulating effect from it. I have more energy, more enthusiasm and I want to move more.. want to get up and get things done. But not in a manic way..just more motivated. Yes, I have honestly noticed that I do feel hungry more frequently than I used to. But Ive noticed that food and liquid seem to be passing through my system faster, as I am also in the bathroom much more frequently now. It feels like Remeron is having an overall stimulating effect on my mind and body. Yes it has stimulated my appetite and makes me feel hungry more often, but it honestly feels like this is a response to my metabolism being stimulated. I used to be very overweight to the point were it was getting bad for my health. It took me years to get down to a "healthy" weight, and I now monitor my weight weekly. In 10 days, I havent gained any weight. Hope this is helpfull... its honest opinion from 10 days worth of experience .
The Emperor
I was only on it for a month or two, so I don't know if this will be very helpful. Anyway, I found that I was the most hungry after JUST taking it, and that the rest of the day, I wasn't very hungry. Of course, I was at a low enough dose for it to be sedating, so I just took it when I laid down to go to bed instead of while I was still up and able to go to the cupboard and pull out a box of Wheat Thins and eat the whole damn thing like I had the first night I took the Remeron. Heh. I remember I maintained my weight throughout that time, but I was also running every day and exercising otherwise as well. So technically I should have been LOSING weight, but I wasn't. I didn't gain, though. So that was my experience with Remeron and weight.
jt07
I've been taking Remeron since March. I want to second everything that the Emperor has said. Just after taking it, I have a massive increase in my appetite so I try to take it immediately before sleep. But sometimes I need to calm down so I can sleep and I take it earlier. I would say that the weight gain comes from an appetite increase rather than any metabolism changes, but of course, I'm no doctor. All I know is that it makes me hungry. San
I ate everything I could find on Remeron. I was suffering from EDNOS at the time and my pdoc put me on it to "aid" in gaining weight.
Cinnamon
Thanks so much for your input, everyone. I don't find that it is making me hungrier so hopefully that means I'm not gaining weight, although I'm really nervous, because my doc is weighing me tomorrow, and I REALLY don't want it to be up, because the Remeron is working so well. williamockham
Same experiences as Emperor and jt07. Been on chronic doses from 15 to 60 without any weight gain. I don't eat much during the day, so I don't beat myself up if I eat a bowl of cereal or some ice cream when I take it in the evening.
chimpmaster
I havent really noticed much difference in my appetite since starting remeron. Mind you I have only started it recently. From what I have read it isn't much different to ssri's and snri's in terms of appetite and weight gain. Its not going fatten you up like a thanksgiving turkey the way Anti-Psychotics often do. But we will see how I feel in 6 months
Cinnamon
Thanks for everyone's input. I can officially say that it has not caused weight gain or hunger in the ten days I've been taking it. Thank goodness, because it's working.
