Has anyone else done this?

Recommended Posts

I've been having a very hard time with delusions and extreme anxiety, right now it almost feels like I'm having a heart attack. I have taken up to 45mg of oxazepam at one time before when things got very bad. But since then I have built up a small tolerance to it. Usually I take 30mg at night to sleep. I was wondering if taking 60mg would be too dangerous? I'm a super hypochondriac and I'm just worried about it causing an overdose.

No, 60 mg probably wouldn't be dangerous, considering you can get oxazepam in 50 mg tablets around here. But you should not take higher doses than you've been prescribed without discussing it with your doctor first. You may also want to discuss switching to another benzo like lorazepam, alprazolam or diazepam, since oxazepam tends to be a very mild benzo and perhaps is not doing the job for you anymore.

I'd love to do that, but my doctor insists that all of them are the same, and that the only difference is how fast they work, and how long they last. :/ He won't make any changes to my medication but they aren't doing anything any more. I really need to calm down. A few days ago they put me in the hospital and I was given .05mg of risperidone to take for a month. It's not helping either, I find that it makes me more edgy. It also doesn't help with psychosis. Any suggestions?

You doctor is correct. But sometimes if you develop a tolerance to one, it helps to switch to another. I'm assuming that you mean that in the hospital they put you on 0.5 mg of risperidone, not 0.05 mg. It still is a very small dose and not likely to be helpful with delusions. Call your pdoc as soon as you can, and tell him/her that you are going through a rough time and that the meds aren't working.

Oh yes, sorry, I did mean to write 0.5mg. lol What would you suggest doing if I can't get him to switch my medication or increase it? Should I take a higher dose every second day or something like that? I don't have withdrawal from my oxazepam strangely enough, I've been taking 30mg of it for 5 months, and I haven't been taking Risperidone long enough to have withdrawal from it, I don't think any ways. Thanks for the suggestions guys by the way. :)
