Effexor and alcohol

That IS an effect effex seems to have on many people, the sad thing is you just keep putting more and more in there trying to get the buzz.

Not good.

Believe me when I say hubby has gone through this and there truly is a point at which I don't care if you don't think you can feel a damn thing, others can tell you are shitfaced.

Nothing worse than a wide awake drunk.  ;)   Do yourself a favor and don't test it.

Or if you need proof, have a friend over to videotape you. When you are sober, you will see you really were drunk!

I have found drinking alcohol on Effexor leaves me exhausted the next day. It takes about 24 hours to recover from what feels like a very untypical hangover. Most of this time involves sleeping. I have also experienced the not feeling drunk thing also, which leads to overconsumption. I can feel sleepy the next day after just 2 drinks, however.

Interesting thread. :P

I'm a cheap date to begin with because I don't drink frequently, but when I do I can have 2 drinks and feel about as buzzed as I do with 5...ie. pretty buzzed but never get falling down drunk or slurred speech etc (I'm female ~140lbs). Also, since I've been depressed, alcohol just made it worse and the hangovers were AWFUL, so I really avoided it. Now having been on effexor for a month, I've had one drinking night - and had very "happy, hyper" drunkeness, which worries me b/c I enjoyed it so much, and I didn't have the usual hangover. I only had 3 drinks though. Maybe it just increased the effects of the alcohol.

I have a big history of alcoholism and other addictions in my family, so I'm pretty wary about enjoying alcohol, though I've found myself to have very very few addictive tendencies. I am going to keep a close eye on this.

As for you Chad - be very careful. Your body definitely can't process endlessly. Even people who have a high tolerance in terms of maintaining functionality are doing a lot of damage to their livers with high consumption.

And Min, I'm not sure it's good advice to suggest skipping doses of effexor ever, much less in order to drink. I'm not an expert, but everything I've heard indicates that effexor is particularly not a drug you want to miss doses of, and in any case, replacing a beneficial medication in order to take a poison is a questionable plan.  ;)

Everybody take care of yourselves! Ok, I'm sure that's enough mom from me.  :)

I seriously think Effexor makes me want to booze more. I was shocked to read that I'm not alone in the information section on the main page about effexor.  Others reported a sort of "craving" for alcohol as well. That's not to good, but I have to resist because this drug has helped me out in so many ways.

Take care everyone!  Everything in moderation.... ;)

In addition to what I posted previously, I too have experienced an increased urge to drink on Effexor. In fact, I rarely drank at all before taking the drug. I find now that drinking does not make me tired during the act (but certainly the next day), and that it feels grrrrreat and I could keep going if those I am around are inclined to. DANGEROUS! After finding out that others have experienced this as well, I have felt much much better, because I was baffled by where this new trend in me was coming from.

The way it makes me feel the next day cannot be a good sign. I have taken more to avoiding it when possible.

Hi Chad

This has been a serious issue for me for awhile! I was thinking for a long time that Effexor was making everything fine on the surface but that I was bottling up anxiety, and therefore having the urge to drink. But now that I've found out this could be just a side effect, I feel sooo much better at least knowing where the cravings are coming from! Since finding out I'm going to be switching meds because my poor little liver must be going limp. Plus, I'm sick of feeling like garbage after one drink.
