stopping klonopin

Recommended Posts

12 weeks ago my doc started me on 20 mg of celexa and 1.5 mg of klonpin. At the time i didnt know to space it out so i was just taking it in the morning. But on somdays i would take less if i could. Well it has been 12 weeks now and i wanted to go ahead and stop taking it. Talk to my doc and he said just stop or take .25 for a few days then stop.He just gave me ambien if i couldnt sleep. After some reading i dont think that is a good idea! Today i started .5 this morning and am going to take .5 this evening. My question is what do i do now? How long do i continue this and then what to do? I want off as soon as possible but safely i am scared about the seizures i have read about. I would love some help here and remember its been 12 weeks. Thank you so much and God bless!!!

Hey -

Ordinarily, I'd tell you to talk to your doctor, but it seems like you already did. The best I can do is say that there's no real "one size fits all" way - a lot of it depends on your body. It seems like you are going to try taking less today, so see how that feels and go from there. If you feel fine, drop some more, if you feel intolerably bad, add some back. And if things do get really out of hand or you're having a lot of difficulty, be sure to call your doctor and let them know. Some people do get stuck on benzos, but not everyone. I was on Klonopin for a while and I got off very easily, almost no withdrawal at all.

I was on it for probably a month or so? I was also on Ativan, which is a different benzodiazepine, for a few months at one point and that was pretty easy for me to get off of as well. It could go either way with you, but try not to let all the horror stories scare you too much.

You know, I actually took 1 mg of Klonopin each morning for just a little less than three years and just stopped taking cold turkey so I could start ECT. I had no side effects. Now I'm not saying that will happen to you. I'm DEFINITELY not suggesting this. I'm just saying YMMV. Like tryp said, when you're feeling really bad, add a little back. Take some out of your routine when you feel a little better. Everybody's body is VERY different when it comes to things like this. And if you ever get really confused with what you should be doing, always ask your pdoc! That's what they are there for!

But the Ambien is definitely for sleep... because if you stay awake on that, you could possibly have some very interesting or scary hallucinations...
