PBF
Just wonder which atypical APs are the most popular here. Comments welcome.
yo123
Abilify is a bit agitating but I am so psyched it got me out of my depression. The risperdol also stopped delusions cold, so I value that too, but Abilify has the sentimental vote for me.
wanderingNZer
Seroquel has done good things for me but unfortunately i've gained at least 20kg, like 44 pounds or so and i'm still gaining. my general doc is already worried about my weight since i have high blood pressure so i guess we'll be discussing a med change when i see her in a week or so. good luck to me finding pants besides sweatpants that fit gah. so yeah i'm bummed coz if i wasn't having this weight prob Seroquel would be my wonder drug. yo123
has your doc talked to you about increased diabetes risk? does that even apply for seroquel? i know it does for zyprexa etc.
wanderingNZer
nope neither pdoc or general doc said anything about diabetes. general doc ordered fasting blood sugar with a bunch of other stuff that got checked a couple months ago and it came back fine, if that's relevant, i don't know much about diabetes. scatty
Zyprexa worked well for my mania but the diabetes risk & weight gain were too troublesome to continue it long term.
Panz
I only take 100mg of Seroquel at night to stop me from thinking/panicing myself awake, I actually lost a few pounds last month from my trial with Zyprexa. I gained about 20 pounds in three weeks on that stuff.
HazelBLK
None of the above. I liked stelazine and cogentin. I know this sounds dumb but it worked the best for me and I can't get it anymore cuz people abuse cogentin. Darned substance abusers. It's crazy and it's been done before. blackbird
Just out of curiosity, why do people abuse Cogentin? My fave anti-psychotic has to go to Abilify because of the low side effect profile.
Min
i'm the only one who likes geodon? i love it! makes it so i still have a lil bit of mania/depression so i can get creative (i write a lot) and makes me eat less! only downside is geodon + heat = bad
number_6
Seroquel cut off my breathing at some insanely low dose... something like 12.5-25mg.
username
Risperdal and Seroquel were both great. I also got the added bonus of them helping my depression tremendously in combination with an SSRI. I have been on SSRIs without the APs, and they simply do not perform as well. I voted for Seroquel. Batou
Abilify made me want to crawl out of my skin. Stopped abruptly. Geodon side effects were so severe - vertigo - that I had to crawl down the hall to get to the phone to call the pdoc. It took me an hour to get to the phone, the nausea and vertigo were that bad. Seroquel started taking it about three or four weeks ago. Have not been able to titrate up past 100mg because at 200mg I had orthostatic hypotension and passed out twice hitting my head on the floor both times. I am a zombie, I sleep forever. Zyprexa works the best for me. As a mood stabilzer at 10mg for most of this year I was fine. I did not gain much weight. My condition improved greatly. I was weaned off the Zyprexa and within a month the depression came back. I would rather take Zyprexa but pdoc wants me to give the Seroquel a try. Dweii
Out of the atypicals I've only tried Abilify, so I guess I'll vote for that. Don't know how well it's working though, since I'm also on Fluanxol which is a kickass med. I loooove it. I know people here are not very fond of the typicals, but Fluanxol is amazing. But when I was in psych ward the doctors wanted me on Abilify instead, so I have to titrate down on the Fluanxol, but I get depressed everytime I try. At least Abilify has been side-effect free for me. It's neither stimulating or sedating.
lilie
seroquel was weird for me. the first time i was on it i gained a crapload of weight and had breathing problems so i switched to zyprexa and has seriously nasty akasthia so i went ack to seroquel now I'm not having hardly and weight gain or breatheing problems. maybe I'm just used to it. lilie
Fiona
It's definately Seroquel for me. I've been on it for a couple years, and have no complaints. The effect it has on me is noticable, to both me and my best friends, if I really miss a dose. I liked stelazine, an older med, quite a bit. When we decided I should stick with an AP long term, I shifted from stelazine to Seroquel due to concerns about side effects. On Zyprexa I wasn't awake long enough to know if it was helpful, and the only time I've taken Risperdal making me sleepy and a bit vague was largely the point. JennaPoz
I have only been on Seroquel for a couple of days now but I feel so much better. No racing thoughts, no staying up all night. Finally got a good nights rest. Risperdal worked so good for me but raised my prolactin levels and I had breast milk which is not good. It made my breasts larger which is always nice though lol! I had lots of bad side-effects though and the prolactin levels was why I had to stop this med. Risperdal turned me into a whole new person though. A happier me. Abilify made me feel restless and I was getting up every morning at 4-5 am. I was not sleeping that good on this med. I lost my ability to watch tv or to read from taking this damn med. and it hasn't come back yet. I am hoping it will soon as it is very boring when you can't do anything. Well thats my take on these meds. I am hoping Seroquel will be the wonder drug for me. My RN says that Lamactil or Lithium would be some other choices if this does not do the job. sdjeff
For controlling my symptoms, Zyprexa was the best. Had to stop it though. Gained too much weight and it messed with my metabolism something fierce.
Loon-A-TiK
I'm not voting for any of these, because of the ones I've tried, I've hated them all. So far, I haven't found an AP I get along with Seroquel- ok at small doses...above 100, made me feel like i was jumping out of my body and shook all day and night Geodon- threw up and slept for 10 hours, threw up again, slept 10 more hours Abilify- got nervous and edgy, then had issues like with Seroquel My pdoc wants me on a low dose of Risp. to help my anxiety. I'm going to do it, but I really hope I don't run into another Geodon! Vile, evil, terrible drug!!!
Bohemian
None, and I've tried every one except Clozapine (which I start tomorrow). Best, Chris
Mechante
Risperdal, though I can't tolerate anything higher than 2mg of it.
pressmama
I really, really tried to make Seroquel work. I liked how it helped my OCD thoughts and my bipolar. But I was having a racing heart at night (170 beats per minute), trouble breathing and orthostatic hypotension. I stay on it for five months. I voted for risperdal though. I've been on it 10 days but it has a much lower side effect profile for me. Much lower. But it doesn't help me sleep as well and doesn't help with my OCD as much. But it is better for my Bipolar, the bigger problem.
notstupidjustslow
Risperadal did nothing for me at the dose I was on. Abilify made me feel seasick. I love Zyprexa (knocked out my panic attacks stat), but it's made me gain weight, so we're getting me off of it. This has not gone well. I was stupid and decided to go from 5mgs to 0, and I started having horrible anxiety, waking up at 5 AM in a panic, having horrible, vivid dreams. Now I'm on 2.5 mgs Zyprexa (weaning off) and 40 of Geodon. The combo is pretty awesome. I've slept through the night for the first time in months (when I was still on Zyprexa), which I suspect is the Geodon. So far no side effects, so hopefully it will continue to work after the Zyprexa is taken out of the equation. I think this might be a long term thing for me... GravyBoat
I have only tried Zyprexa and Risperdal and I voted for Risperdal. This is the best I have felt in ages. My OCD thoughts are wayyy under control. I still have them but they dont plague me like before. I dont see things in my periferal vision anymore. I dont hear things that arent there. The only thing I dont like about it is that if I miss a dose at all I get instant flu symptoms and feel like im so hot I am going to die. Zyprexa just made me extra crazy. I had racing thoughts all night long and felt like I had bugs all over me. Yah. It wasnt fun.
