netsavy006
I hope this is an ok topic to discuss. I apologize if it's not. I'd like to know are there ways to help overcome anorgasmia that comes from meds? Thanks, ~ Andy
Calypte
Is this a recent thing that started when you added Celexa, or has it been going on for longer? If it's the Celexa, an obvious solution might be to try a different antidepressant. Sometimes augmenting with Wellbutrin can be helpful, but of course since you're BP there is the risk of mania. In any case I'm not aware of any non-medical method to overcome med-induced anorgasmia, so you should discuss this with your pdoc.
tryp
There are a lot of topics about this already if you search. Just in terms of the "doing nothing" approach, it often does get better with time. I had it on Celexa and on Zoloft as well and I found that after the first few months, it was still noticeable, but I was able to have satisfactory sex, so I put up with it. Though, the improved sex life has certainly been a perk of being banned from SSRIs. There is the option of adding other medications, but I don't know how much of an option that is for you specifically. The two most common attempts are BuSpar and Wellbutrin, IIRC. There are a bunch of other drug options out there - doctors have thrown pretty much everything at this problem. You could try switching to another AD - even another SSRI can change things. I found that I had less of a problem on Zoloft compared to Celexa, though it was still noticeable and since Zoloft actually flipped me manic, there is really no contest as to which was the worst for me. What some people do (with their doctor's approval - personally I would never feel comfortable doing this) is they take an SSRI "holiday" every so often for a few days and have sex then. I wouldn't do it myself, but it's been tried.
netsavy006
I think it might be the addition of Celexa that is causing this problem. I've only been on Celexa a little over a week, so I want to give Celexa more time to see if it would help my anxiety (which is the reason I was rx'd Celexa). I've been on other ADs, which led me to mania, so I'm hoping Celexa doesn't do that to me. If I left out something, please ask/comment to let me know what needs clarifying. Thanks again, ~ Andy
tryp
Yeah, in your specific situation, I would personally recommend just sticking with it and seeing if things improve/if the drug even works.
netsavy006
I'm just letting you know I wasn't planning on quitting the medication. I'd rather this side effect than untreated anxiety, but I was just wondering if there may be ways to "work around" it.
tryp
As your body gets used to the Celexa, it will probably get better. The first few weeks, I just couldn't get around it at all, but after that I just had to work a little harder, if you know what I mean. Once it gets to that point it's quite tolerable, or it was for me anyway.
