Blart752
Has anyone been on two anticonvulsants and triggered mania or hypomania. Out of anticonvulsants I've taken, I've taken gabapentin and topamax together before. As well as gabapentin and depakote. Both seemed to trigger some sort of mania. I just feel all hyped up and stuff. It was on a low dose of topamax, so maybe willtry it again at a different dose to see if i can stabilze. As well as the gabapentin being once daily instead of twice like it is now. The depakote was strange though. I would get all hyped up on it. Neurontin never did that alone. As for trileptal and tegretol, I've tried trileptal but it sucked really bad. and just gave me a headache. In an unrelated issue, does tegretol cross the blood brain barrier? jt07
I take two anticonvulsants (Tegretol and Lamictal), and I've never felt hyped-up on them, but I'm not bipolar. The Tegretol (carbamazepine) makes me feel mellow though. I assume that Tegretol does cross the blood-brain border since I can feel it within minutes of taking my dose. (I take the chewable tablets). Also, it wouldn't be an effective AC if it didn't.
TOT
Neurontin never did anything for me. Until recently i was on Lamictal and Depakote. While on those i was put on Effexor which triggered mania. The mania went away when i went off of Effexor, but i remained depressed. I will probably be put back on one or both anticonvulsants after i'm done with ECT. Not sure, we'll see.
Cattitude
I was on Lamictal. When Depakote was added I went into a bad mixed state. That was stopped and I was kept on the Lamictal and Trileptal was added. After a few days I got the dreaded Lamictal rash, and both medications were stopped. rowan77
I became manic while taking 3 mood stabilisers, namely lithium, valproate and lamotrigine. But the cause was not the mood stabilisers, it was that the pdoc raised my venlafaxine to 300mg. As soon as I went off the venafaxine my mania went away, but unfortunately I also became depressed. It's amazing to think that even 3 mood stabilisers couldn't prevent anti-depressant induced mania!
