saoirse
So my pdoc is putting me on Wellbutrin... tentatively. As a sort of trial period. I'm eager to take my first dosage tomorrow morning, as this last depressive episode is still nagging at me (though abilify is working beautifully). However, I just went and read a bunch of posts and links on how activating Wellbutrin is, and I'm worried. I no longer have a bipolar dx because my few hypo/manic episodes were precipitated by medications, but I went seriously manic on Prozac. I hallucinated that I had a celebrity's face and almost bought a plane ticket to China. The funny thing is that I was feeling so damn -good- that I did my best to hide the episode, and it worked... for a while. Now, I've never told my pdoc the extent of that episode, mostly because I believed that it was a fluke and it won't happen again. Plus, I was brought down fairly quickly (albeit roughly) by some additional seroquel. But I'm hearing some pretty crazy stories about wellbutrin. Does anyone who actually has bipolar here take it? And is there anyone else (like me) who is not bipolar but who has gone manic on it? Thanks, guys.
hallowedink
Not bipolar and didn't go manic. I'm not really answering your questions, but I just wanted to reassure you that people do have good experiences with Wellbutrin. It's not been particularly activating for me at all, and it's working fantiastically. YMMV, but to be honest you won't know until you try. Also, chemically it's pretty different to Prozac, so there's certainly no guarantee that it will affect you the same way.
tryp
I'm also in that BP grey zone and I had to stop Wellbutrin after two days because of "activating" symptoms - mainly severe irritability edging into paranoia. Worse than what I had on Celexa, but not as bad as the shit that went down on Zoloft. But there are people in our situation who tolerate it just fine, so you may as well give it a try. Just be alert and ready to call your doctor if things go south.
The Emperor
I'm not bipolar. BUT a lot of AD's apparently make me manic, so I can't take them. Wellbutrin with Ablify worked great for my depression and in a short period of time. However I also suffer from a shit ton of anxiety and Wellbutrin just magnified that so much that I had to be taken off it. Otherwise it worked really well. And I had to take it at night because it made me tired.
humanoid
I am bipolar 1 and took wellbutrin for a long time. I would still be on it had it not been the cause of my seizure. It didn't make me manic at all, just helped a lot with my depression. I agree with what others are saying, give it a try because you never know how it will affect you. bluqanary
I'm in the "grey area" of bipolar, and Wellbutrin made me talk a mile a minute. Very, very activating to me. Although I will say that I was on the generic, which apparently is very different from the real thing.
lavender fairy
I'm in the grey area between major depression and bipolar as well, and I have been on wellbutrin for two months with no problems.
dancesintherain
150mg is doing well for me, 300mg caused badness (irritable, sleep difficulties, crying spells).
jt07
I guess I'm one of the few people who found Wellbutrin actually sedating. However, it did increase my anxiety for a while.
moody me
I took Wellbutrin 300 mg years ago with Zoloft and I had a manic episode, but when I took 150 mg with a mood stabilizer I was fine. I'm Bipolar II.
koali777
Activating...my only proof and anecdotal evidence is that I get insomnia from it...I have to take my first dose at 5 AM and the second at 1 PM if I want to sleep. It did cause anxiety and a racing heart at first, definitely more awake and better concentration, and with Adderall it makes me way too stimulated sometimes. losdodgers
it was non activating for me but was so activating in terms of anxiety i had chest pain and panic attacks and as a result of the stimulation i threw up EVERY time i ate during the day, except oddly not at night
