Getting sick and knowing when to redose (reeaaally need all your help)

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys. It seems as though i've come down with a case of either food poisoning, or the flu. I find myself throwing up. Luckly it was an hour after i took my last medication for the day so I'm good as far as that goes because as far as i know all meds are absorbed within an hour of oral consumption.

My question is this. If take a medication, and you throw up before the hour time limit is up, how do you know whether to redose or not? I'm on 6mg clonazepam a day and 1200mg gabapentin at night (seizure med), both of which could cause seizures during withdrawals if you don't get your dose... so for me the issue is paramount. (if paramount means important).

So how do you guys know when to redose when you get sick? To be honest this is the first time i've thrown up in like 3 years so I've been rather lucky... but all good things come to an end right.

How do you guys deal with getting sick and redosing? is there a certain time period in which to redose if you've thrown up? I wouldn't want to double up on my gabapentin because before when i was titaning up I was getting neurological side effects so its really important to know in what scenario do i redose the gabapentin. I'd especially like to hear from those who are on meds that can cause life threatening withdrawals such as clonazepam (a benzodiazepine) and gabapentin (an anti convulsant/nerve pain med). But i'd really like for anyone to weigh in whether your on those meds are not.

Thanks in advance guys.

My pharmacist was basically like " i dunno wait for the withdrawals and then take one or two" but i'd just like experience from people who've gotten sick and are on meds and how they coped with that because you guys have the first hand experience.

I have certainly been in your position and had, perhaps, unnecessary angst about the whole thing.

Of course I take Lithium and an extra dose is not a good thing, carries an element of risk.

So, if you stomach is settled I would just take my regular dose of Neurontin tonight.

And I know you have a tendancy to get anxious.....I really don't thing there is a huge

risk of serizure. Maybe I am wrong, but I would just try and take your evening medications.

If vomiting goes on, and becomes a big problem then go to urgent care. There are some

awesome anti nausea meds - one of which you dissolve under your tongue.

There's a pretty nasty norvirus going around, but it will run its course in a day or two. As far as taking the meds, if you are really vomiting strongly, then you will no doubt have to re-take your meds. Call your doctor to be sure. I have never had to cross that bridge, but if I did, I would simply take the dose again because I know I'm under the max dose. But that's just me, and I can handle the side effects once or twice. Call your doctor.

I'm not priviledged enough to have a doctor to call, besides my pdocs office which is now closed till monday.

on the plus side though lady bug i do have gravol, an anti nausea/anti vomiting med so if worse comes to worse i could take that, the only thing is that it partially metabolizes into diphenhydramine and thats bad news for me as that stuff messess with my heart sometimes. but i'd take it if i had to.

i took my gabapentin 2 hours ago and am feeling the effects so i think i am safe for tonight. My stomach has settled somewhat too. Maybe its all the mould i cleaned out of my bathroom sink and toilet that made me feel sick because i didn't start to feel sick untill i went back in there to shower.
