Lamotrigine causing messed up dreams?

Recommended Posts

I've been having really screwed up, extremely vivid dreams since starting lamotrigine, which have increased since I increased my dose to 100 mg. I'm sleeping through the night now, which I wasn't before increasing my dose, but I wake up shaking from horrid nightmares and just really fucked up dreams. eg., cheating on my husband or vice versa, issues with family, PTSD flashbacks, armed home invasion, and last night I dreamt he had recently found out he had a child over 10 years ago and refused to acknowledge her or her mum because he doubted his paternity or something, and had kept it secret from me... kind of weird, random stuff but I woke up nearly in tears because I was SO SURE it had really happened. There's been other stuff similar to that; the memory fades within a day or two but for several hours it feels very real and sometimes distressing/frightening. Clearly, a lot of the dreams relate to fears I already have. I know it's one of the listed side effects, but I haven't had dreams that real since I took Effexor.

Has anyone else had this experience with Lamictal? Does it fade over time, just like the other side effects? Any tips on how to ground oneself after a distressing dream? I've never been able to handle nightmares very well.

When I first started Lamictal, I had extremely vivid dreams and nightmares. And I am someone who has a lot of vivid dreams, and some lucid dreams. I had horrible nightmares at first. They were all weird, and had long, winding narratives, and were terrifying, even if there wasn't anything overtly terrifying in "the scene." A lot of people on CBs have reported weird or lots of dreaming when starting Lamictal. Some people seem to have this happen every time they bump up their dosage, but I only had it during the initial titration.

I also had very vivid, messed up dreams while titrating up on lamictal...I normally have fairly weird dreams anyway but they definitely had a more real life feel to them on lamictal...I'm at 200mg now and haven't noticed as many of the vivid dreams lately so I suspect that it was possibly just a temporary side effect. Hopefully it also passes for you
