What movies always suck you in?

Recommended Posts

I saw this on another forum, turned out to be really interesting...

While channel surfing, what movies do you *have* to watch, no matter how many times you've seen them before?

For me:

Shawshank Redemption

Someone Like You

(Ashley Judd & Hugh Jackman)

.... or any other Ashley Judd/feel good movie for that matter

Every time!!!!!

I LOVE "someone like you." God, he's a hunk. My husband loves Ashley Judd, so that's one of our favorite movies.

I also love "Best in Show." heh And I could never turn away from "Casablanca."

Of a whole range of black and white WW2 or WW2-era films, which are my top genre taste,

"Dunkirk" for me edges out even Casablanca, The Dambusters, In Which We Serve, Ice Cold in Alex...

though Bogie and Bacall in "To Have and Have Not" comes pretty close.

Most of Humphrey Bogart's films will be a "stop and watch", to be honest.

Modern stuff? Not so much.

Apocalypse Now.

Bladerunner (Director's cut)

The Usual Suspects

Groundhog Day

A Few Good Men

In the Heat of the Night

..if in the mood.

And I'm sure many others I'll recall as soon as I see them listed, here or in the TV schedules.

Classic Hammer titles, or the best Marx Brothers ones, or...

Wild hearts can't be broken is an old favourite of mine :)

I also like any of the Xmen movies with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, or Pirates of the Carribean with Jhonny Depp ;p

I don't watch much broadcast/cable television, but I have an extensive film collection. More than books, movies always seem to inspire me to write. I have a lot of favorite movies, but I tend to go more toward certain directors or screenwriters than just specific movies, because the storytelling is what makes most films engrossing for me.

Akira Kurosawa

Roman Polanski

Darren Aronofsky

Christopher Nolan

Francis Ford Coppola

David Cronenberg

Hideo Nakata

Stanley Kubrick

Guillermo del Toro

The Coen Brothers

Steven Soderburg

Quentin Tarantino (how embarassing...)

Robert Rodriguez (by extension embarassing)

Takashi Miike (also very embarassing...)

Andrew Kevin Walker (screenwriter of 'Se7en' and '8MM')

Then there are just some broad genres that I really love for their own sakes. Cinema verite and shakey-cam horror films, J-horror (and Asian horror in general), Shaw Bros, Toho Studios, Hammer Horror, and a lot of corny stuff.

Emettman and Vanderk are men after my own heart, right down to the Hammer Horror films and David Lynch. (I don't care what anyone says, Lynch's 'Dune' was amazing.)

I am more of a TV person. There was a time I could name all the Star Trek Next Generation episodes within the first 3 seconds - including season and episode #. Then there was Friends, then South Park. I still have them all memorized. Parks and Recreation, Flight of the Conchords, The Sarah Silverman Program, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It drives my husband nuts that I mouth the words to the shows we watch. I'm not proud of this or anything. I mean there's no glory in knowing something because you mindlessly watch it every night to sleep. But in my defense, I was in theatre and memorize the first few read throughs.

Movies are hard for me. I watch a lot of horrors and thrillers, but mostly for research (ha, seriously). I hate romances. I hate romantic comedies. I hate dramas where kids die or parents die and leave kids.

Movies I watch more than once:

Bringing Up Baby

Demolition Man

Louis C.K. standup

Heathers

Clerks

Enough

Meet Me in St. Louis

These are not good movies mind you. They are just movies that allow me to feel comfort in some aspect of them.
