Recommended Posts

I take vistaril for panic attacks, also synthroid, lithium carbonate, crestor, I have gained almost 10 pounds in 2 months, is there a way to stop the weight gain with vistaril and because I am hypothyroid too? Please know I am here to help others as well as get answers too. I am 5'3' and 141, I weighted 134 right after christmas there is heart disease in my family and I have to lose this seight. Thank you for any help any of you can offer..Does Vistaril have to be taken 1 a day or does as needed mean just if you feel like an attack is hitting? Dr said as needed and I have been taking it one a day for fear of an attack,, he knows this? Just want to know how to do it all. Take care group and I appreciate all this!!

If a drug is prescribed "as needed", it does mean you only need to take it when you are actually troubled by anxiety, rather than on a daily basis. If your doc's okay with you taking it on a daily basis, though, I'm sure that's fine too. However, weight gain is not a listed side-effect of hydroxyzine, so it seems rather unlikely that you've gained ten pounds due to it. Did you start the lithium recently too? That is more known to cause weight gain. And of course, hypothyroidism will cause weight gain as well, so maybe your Synthroid dose needs adjusting?

Vistaril! I used to take that for rage. It is an antihistamine & nonaddictive. I was also prn with an upper limit of 4 capsules (don't remember mg). In bad times I would take 8 or 12 without ill effect. I'm also one to take handfuls of ibuprofen when I'm cramping; so please don't trust me. It was prescribed to me for a long time and I used it less and less. Eventually I just dropped it.

One a day should be absolutely fine. I'm glad it's been working as a preventative for you; that's fantastic. I think <nobody should trust my thinking> it's pretty innocuous.

Li suppresses thyroid; I used to receive a Rx for thyroid med with my Li Rx. Low normal thyroid levels could be the culprit.

Vistaril isn't usually known to cause weight gain. It might be because of the lithium. How long have you been on the lithium, do you think it might be responsible for the gain?

Also- if Vistaril works for you for anxiety, one per day should not be bad. I am glad it is helping you out! :)
