Rose
I was thinking. The first med I was ever put on for my schizophrenia was respiridone. It did not work for my delusions, not one bit. It was heavily sedating. So I was switched to Zyprexa which worked magic but came off it due to weight gain. I then went on Abilify which worked but gave me a tachycardia. So I had to come off it to try respiridone again. I didn't sleep the whole time I was on respiridone for a whole week. So I complained and went back on a lower dose of Abilify and my sleep went back to normal. The weird thing is, Abilify is not sedating at all. Why was the Respiridone sedating the first time, and causing insomnia the second? Was it because I had two meds in my system? I am curious. This was over a year ago. jt07
I can't answer your question as to why risperidone was sedating the first time and giving you insomnia the second time. Risperidone is not sedating for me and, while it doesn't cause me insomnia, it causes me to wake up early. It didn't work the same for me also the second time I was on it. These are questions that I don't think even doctors can answer. It's just the way our bodies process the meds.
konings
Risperidone also causes me insomnia. it may be that for you the first time around, the sedation outweighed the insomnia by far. I think going off of a drug and going back on it may 'temper' your body to adapt to the drug, so thats why you didnt have sedation the second time around. Also risperidone didnt work as well for me the second time, but I have yet to find out whether that was due to added anticholinergic. My pdoc doesnt think so though. dancesintherain
Side effects can be so crazy. And also hard to tell what's med-induced versus illness-induced. Maybe your doctor has a thought on the question, if you have a chance to talk about it? That's personally at least been helpful for me...just getting a sense of what he's thinking is going on. But if the timing was that precise--insomnia for two weeks on the drug, went away immediately after, I don't think it's a crazy idea. Maybe Abilify isn't causing sedation per se, but is removing whatever symptom/side effect was causing the insomnia? I guess that's really a distinction without a difference.
