Sam
Abortion is such a hot topic with the supreme court here in the US-I was just wondering where we are in the spectrum. I have no idea, isn't that sad? Do most countries regulate it, allow it or have laws against it? Just curious, not starting a debate here. Sam
Hey! Yeah, it is WAY not covered here by Medicare or Medicaid. Medicaid does cover getting your tubes tied, though. Lots of my clients have done that. Oh yeah, you are from Canadia! (My SO is from Canada, too-I always tease him about being from Canadia!) Socialized medicine. I bet that has its pros and cons, but I bet more pros. I don't know. My SO seems to have liked it. So is it a huge deal there or do they just let the law be? grousemouse
i don't think it is a huge deal here. it's not in the media much. it was a while back, but hasn't been for a long time. there are certainly people very passionate about both sides of the debate though. grouse. ncc1701
Heya, In the frozen North: Legally it's available and covered if done in a hospital. Private clinics do most of it and generally some fee applies, like $40. Realistically, and contrary to the ideal of health care being equal-access in all provinces, there are some provinces where it's not available. And many areas, even in Ontario, that are really really far from any abortion services. Occasionally there is talk about re-criminalizing abortion. I don't see it flying. Morgentaler just got an honorary degree from University of Western Ontario despite lots of protesters. There *is* enough passion on both sides to cause trouble. Most docs who do them are very, very careful with security. --ncc--
Sam
Well, maybe they learned something from the deaths of doctors here in the US, ncc. It is so interesting that we in the US know so little about what goes on in Canada. Maybe that is just because I live really far from there and close to Mexico. My boyfriend is from Canada and it amazes me some of the stuff he tells me. It's like having a really interesting next-door neighbor. Someone my family could really learn a lot from, but due to our self-absorbsion, they move away and we never get to know them. Hmm. Sounds like I really need some coffee. No analogies before caffeine. Good plan. Sam
Lily
Almost used like birth control here. Seriously. And some docs will perform it far, far later along than they should. Oh yes, and the pill has consistently gotten bad press (and subsequently people are afraid of it) as being bad for the body. lily (putting on propeller hat now)
