gizmo
I'm seeing the pdoc on Thursday, but I'm sure he will defer me to my OB/GYN or GP. I was on risperdal for about 18 months about five years ago. Worked great except for elevated prolactin levels. I stopped my period completely for 15 months. My prolactin level wasn't so high I was lactating, but it was high. Now I've been on it again for about 20 months, and I haven't had a period in about 15 months. However, I also have a hormone-releasing IUD, which could contribute to my lack of periods. I'm going to see if the pdoc will order a prolactin blood test on Thursday. Here's my question: is there anything I can do/take to lower my prolactin level but still stay on risperdal? I have a really strong family history of osteoporosis (my mother broke her hip at 38 due to it, and I'm 38 now) and I don't want to increase my chances of having the disease. But I don't want to stop the risperdal, as I think it's a very effective treatment for me.
vanderk
I think bromocriptine is used, but I can't vouch for effectiveness. I've known a few women who have opted to stick with Risperdal despite projectile lactation. It's what works for them.
Cetkat
There was a study a long time ago about Lithium being able to lower prolactin levels. It wasn't in combination with an AAP, but it did show consistent results after 6 months of use. I'll see if I can dig it up.
