Generic Seroquel in the states

Recommended Posts

Glad to hear it! I've been waiting to switch to IR seroquel, because ironically the XR is more affordable with the copay assistance from AstraZenica.

That said, I want to share my experience from "within the industry" about how this process normally works. March 26 was the patent expiration date. Yesterday, March 27, Dr Reddy announced it had submitted its application to the FDA to manufacture the generic. That approval should take a few weeks. Typically, when a drug first goes generic, only one company manufactures it. In this case, AZ made a profit-sharing contract with Dr Reddy, and they'll have exclusive manufacturing rights for generic quetiapine for six months. That means that since only one company can make it, generic quetiapine will still be pretty expensive until the 6 month exclusivity period is up.

So in terms of being about to get Seroquel for cheap as a generic, the most significant dip in price will be about six months from when the generic hits the shelves, so I'm thinking probably around November before the price drops significantly.

However, those of you with generous formularies may see the copay for generic Seroquel drop immediately. My pharmacy benefit plan will pay 80% towards a generic, with a minimum copay of $10, so generic Seroquel will probably cost me a solid $70+ a month until the fall. So until then, I'll stay on XR with my handy AZ savings card.

That's good news for me as I don't have any health insurance right now. I pay for my Seroquel with Astra Zeneca's patient assistance program. I would love to see generic Seroquel on Wal-Mart's $4 list.
