CookieN
For those who have taken zyprexa I have some questions and doubts. I am taking zyprexa for the second time, and my weight is increasing again. 1. How long have you taken zyprexa? 2. How much weight did you gain? 3. Did you become insulin resistant/ glucose intolerant /diabetic? How long after you started the medication? 4. Are you taking any treatment for sugar levels? 5. If you were diabetic before taking the medication, were you able to control your sugar levels while on the medication? 5. If you quit the medication, did you lose the weight you gained, were you able to go back to your initial weight? 6. Did your doctor check or tell you to monitor your sugar levels during treatment? Eden
1. How long have you taken zyprexa? About 4 months over two stretches. 2. How much weight did you gain? I don't know the first time but the second (about 1.5months on the drug) I gained 15 or 20 lb. 3. Did you become insulin resistant/ glucose intolerant /diabetic? How long after you started the medication? I don't know. 4. Are you taking any treatment for sugar levels? Not on it anymore, but I considered metformin for a bit as a possible addition. 5. If you were diabetic before taking the medication, were you able to control your sugar levels while on the medication? Doesn't apply. 5. If you quit the medication, did you lose the weight you gained, were you able to go back to your initial weight? Yes and no, I lost about 75% of it. 6. Did your doctor check or tell you to monitor your sugar levels during treatment? No, he was kinda dense. Hope that helps.

gizmo
I'm posting on my phone, so I can't answer your questions one by one. I took it for about 18 month total over three separate occasions. The second time I was on it (nine months), I gained about 20 lbs. I took geodon after it and lost 30 lbs, but gave since gained it back while on depakote. The pdoc monitored me with a blood glucose check and full metabolic panel every 3 months. My fasting glucose level never went outside of normal, but my triglycerides more than doubled. So I got off it. Ironically, my pdoc is considering starting me back on a low dose if I have to get off the risperdal.
CookieN
Thank you all for your responses. I see that none of you took zyprexa for a long time (I took it for 4 years the first time, and went back on it a year ago). I see that I am not the only one who gained a lot of weight while on it. My fasting sugar levels always showed ok, but I found out I had become insulin resistant when another test was done. It is the 2 hour glucose tolerance test. So fasting sugar levels tests are not enough to diagnose insulin resistance. When my insulin resistance was treated I was able to lose weight. For those who changed zyprexa for another medication. Do you consider the new medication better and why? Gizmo what is a metabolic panel???

cfranco92
Well I swapped out Zyprexa for Navane, which is an older AP because Zyprexa gave me high prolactin levels causing me to lactate and have no menstrual cycle (this has gone on for a year now). Navane however made my prolactin levels higher so I'm trying out seroquel and hope to taper off the navane. Switching to Navane didn't help me lose weight and I'm not sure if the seroquel will either.
