Iona_Viona
Anyone know anything about this drug? Anyone ever tried it? Whats it mainly used for? i have just been perscribed it by my p-doc who i trust completely but im a bit freaked out because i keep seeing the words "schizophrenia" and "psyhcotic illness" when i look on web pages about it. Im starting out on half the recommended daily dose as my doc is always really careful like that. i guess i just cant find much info on the drug and would love to hear some first hand experiences. thanks
stinky
i have pericyazine for crazy bad times. it knocks me out. you are being prescribed it because your doc is a cheaparse and doesn't want to risk giving you any of the newer APs because they're not covered on the PBS. I pay full price for my Seroquel because it is superior to neulactil. it is supposedly one of the less bombing out typicals, with less side effects, and is often used in the elderly for that reason. all aps are prescribed for non-psychotic states including bipolar, anxiety, ocd. it's just that it's such an old drug and there are better ones that it gets prescribed more often as a last resort for intractable psychosis. which is why you're probably seeing psychosis all over the place. Iona_Viona
whats the go with this whole PBS stuff??? i really dont get it even after reading the lovely politcally polished website on how great it is! Im pretty sure this med (NEULACTIL) is prescribed as it is on the PBS and i can not afford to pay full price for the newer better meds as i am not elgible for any of our lovely government pension or health care cards as i am able to work. Instead of sitting on my ass all day i feel like i am being punished for trying to fight my illness as i fork out about a 1/3 of my pay each fornight in prescribed drugs, doctors appointments and therapy. At times it would be much easier for me to just sit around and stare at the wall all day but i know working helps keep my moods and lifestlye regular. so why am i being charged a fortune for trying my hardest to be a good citizen and contribute to our countries growth. Is there any other way i can get these newer meds which are not on PBS that have the same effect as the ones i am on but with less server side effects. Someone once told me your doc could make a call or something and get them cheap??? is that right? i dont even know where to post this as a reply to my original thread, health system sucks or who knows where else. can someone help me stop these running thoughts they are driving my bipolar head crazy and now i cant calm my stupid self down!!!!AGRHHHH! stinky
ok, so the way the PBS works is that there are drugs which are freely available, like pericyazine, like amoxycillin, like ventolin, because they are cheap and don't need to be restricted in their use. so you don't need an authority to prescribe them. drugs can be limited and require an authority to prescribe for a number of reasons. clozapine is an authority script because it needs close monitoring and is a dangerous drug. vancomycin is restricted because they want to avoid antibiotic resistance. seroquel, zyprexa, abilify are authority because they are expensive and there are (supposedly) cheaper drugs for things like anxiety, bipolar. so your doc needs to call up the HIC in canberra, and get an authority number for the prescription, otherwise it won't get dispensed. but it has to be authorised for a very narrow range of diagnoses - for the new APs, that's for chronic schizophrenia unresponsive to normal therapy. (zyprexa is also authorised for short term inpatient bipolar control). doing that, your doc is commiting fraud and could get in trouble. they do audit docs every now and then. they can lose their provider number or their license. a lot of docs still do it. unfortunately in australia the pbs listing process takes a long time. so they don't really keep up with new research like the fact that typicals SUCK and atypicals are wayyyy better for everything. so i pay full price for my seroquel. it sucks. if you're paying a lot for stuff - you need to get informed about the safety net and medicare thresholds - it's a lot of work but for people with chronic illnesses it can save you a bit of money. the moral of the story is don't vote for a conservative party who want a user pays health system. Iona_Viona
your government point was exactly what i was thinking when i wrote my post, i know which way my vote will swing mr howard! hahhahah but yeah thanks for the explanation that make more sense. and yes i went to medicare yesterday and i have finally hit the target limit for the safety net to kick in so now hopeful i will pay next to nothing for anything i can claim back on medicare. Thanks Stinky!!!
Nyx
you are being prescribed it because your doc is a cheaparse and doesn't want to risk giving you any of the newer APs because they're not covered on the PBS. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Not exactly. As of 1 August 2005, Seroquel, Zyprexa etc ARE covered by the PBS - Psycholeptics. However, as you say in a later post they are restricted and can only be prescribed for specific illnesses (see link for criteria).

Iona_Viona
and not only is the doc a tight ass but unfortunatly i am too and cant afford to pay the full price as well as pay for my other meds and therapy etc. i know where my doc stands on this now as i discussed this with him and he really believes that this other drug will work well for me and wants me to try it and if it doesnt work we will take it from there as to the next. You'd be happy to know i have nearly been on it a week now and havent had any nasty side effects so at least thats a good start. i was just after an explantion on how pbs works, which i got (thanks) and also specific drug issues. so thanks everyone for your replies!!! very helpful once again! You're posting in an eight year old thread, to a person who hasn't logged in to CB since 2009. I suggest you start a new thread of your own if you want responses, though I warn you that we're not going to take kindly to statements like "she's absolutely skitzo". eta never mind, I see you managed to start a new thread anyway.
