Bipolar meds and strenuous exercise

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm curious if anyone has some insight, thoughts or experiences being on meds specifically bipolar type medications (antipsychotics, mood stabalizers, etc) that don't cause issues w/ strenuous exercise.

I'm only on Seroquel at the moment and am going to speak to my pdoc about this, but I've read that strenuous exercise is not recommended while on Seroquel.

By strenuous exercise I am meaning 2-3 hours of very hard working out a few times a week.

I think most of the AAPs can cause temperature dysregulation, which can make it difficult for your body to cool down. The seroquel. PI. sheet says it hasn't been reported in seroquel but I definitely experience it.

I've never really considered working out for 2-3 hour at a time (except mountain climbing), so I don't have an answer for you. I'd definitely talk to your pdoc and gdoc before taking on that kind of exercise, especially if you aren't used to it.

My pdoc always told me to be careful in the sun with Seroquel as it affects the body's ability to regulate temperature which can lead to heat stroke. I don't know about exercise. I suppose you should just be careful while exercising and make sure to keep well hydrated

Thanks for your responses.

I used to do roller derby. I'm wanting to get back into it, which is 3 days a week 2-3 hours of training w/ the team as well as practicing myself other times.

I've found (now I'm on Seroquel) that the heat does affect me more than it used to, so I'm doing my best to keep hydrated during any warmer weather we have & take it "easy" until I find out just exactly how my body's going to react with heat & or exercise.

Good on you!! :) I like roller derby & a friend of mine is starting a club locally so I'll be learning how to skate soon! LOL

Thanks everyone. I stopped taking the Seroquel anyway because I've been having weird chest pain issues and need to a physician to get a long needed checkup. Just taking things slowly.
