your_illusion97
Ok, this post is for my gf who is also Bipolar. She knows I am posting this btw and wants some info. Ok so she just started on Seroquel XL 300mg and Trazadone 150mg at bedtime for sleep. Well we dont think its working. She can take both meds and still be up all night with me (she is very supportive of me in my time of need). Now we know meds can do different things for each person, but shouldnt they be making her tired at least a bit?
Eden
Maybe try sleeping in different rooms. If 300mg seroquel and 150mg trazodone don't make you the least bit sleepy you forgot to swallow them. Your gf should make an account, we're a first person site.
your_illusion97
well sleeping in separate rooms is kinda hard when we only have the living room and the bedroom, but I will tell her that. Also I did suggest to her to make her own account, so I will encourage her agsin to do that, sorry for posting for her. She doesnt like to type, she is better at talking things out than typing them. Maybe I can be her interpreter....lol. But seriously they do not make her sleepy, I know if I took those meds together I would sleep for a week. I cant even take the plain Seroquel because its so sedating to me. I know she IS taking them because we take our night meds together. Sooo maybe another med would be better. bluelikejazz
I've found the normal seroquel more sedating than the XR personally. Have you talked to your pdoc about it? and welcome to CB
kittyloaf
I was also going to suggest the regular Seroquel, as that has been sedating for me along with working as an antimanic and antipsychotic. I've never tried the XR, or Trazodone.
bobbiejoe52
Thanks for the welcome. Here is my major problem, I dont have a pdoc. My meds are being managed by my gp. I am on medicaid and a lot of pdocs here dont take it, including the NP that my gf sees. I am going to call my gp's office Monday morning and talk to a nurse or leave a message. your_illusion97
I am working with her to try to find a pdoc asap. Her doc has her on stuff that I dont think as a bipolar she should be on, example 60mg Prozac. I need to get her to post her meds in her sig. gizmo
First off, I can and do and have taken that much seroquel and trazadone and don't sleep. And I'm not manic. I take 300 mg of the IR that hits you harder than the XR. Also, there is no hard and fast rule against ADs with BP, ESP When combined with an AAP. I have taken ADs for many years before I was dx'd and was never pushed into a manic episode by them. A good pdoc will figure out many of the problems your gf is facing. Medicare or not, there are plenty out there. Have you tried calling 1-800-MEDICARE and seeing if they can give you some pdoc names?
bobbiejoe52
ok well I dont know anything about medicare, not on that, but Medicaid is the state funded basically medical and medicine insurance. I think is called different things in different states, not sure.
Eden
To be fair I have also taken that 200-800mg seroquel IR/XR and 400mg (if i remember right) trazodone and not slept, my response was pretty half assed and I apologize, I was not in the best frame of mind. In the short term you can ask your GP for seroquel instant release, I'm sure if he can prescribe xr he can prescribe IR. I'm glad you've joined, welcome. larkspur
ok well I dont know anything about medicare, not on that, but Medicaid is the state funded basically medical and medicine insurance. I think is called different things in different states, not sure. Try asking your Medicaid case worker for information on community mental health clinics. If you're in a relatively metropolitan area, there should be at least a couple pdocs accepting Medicaid and your case worker should be able to point you in their direction. If you do not know where your local office is, google the name of your county and the words "mental health." there is also an article about this subject pinned to the top of the health insurance forum. If you have bp, being treated by a gp is really a last resort option.
enlightened_plutonian
It might just be that 300mg Seroquel XR is not sedating for you. Different people respond differently to different meds. The IR might be worth trying. I think a lot of people find that more sedating. Though I have only been on the XR. Definitely bring this up with your doctor. And I definitely agree that you need to find a pdoc.
Gearhead
I take both XR and IR, and I find the XR is not sedating, while the IR is. Also, I was once on trazadone for sleep, and it didn't work at all. I would be very leery of the Prozac as well, as SSRIs are a big, stimulating problem for a lot of bipolar people.
