EffexorXL+Xanax+ToprolXL

Recommended Posts

I have been on lexapro 20mg, Toprol (beta Blocker for anxiety)100mg, and xanax 1mg for about 3 years.  The lexapro has completely pooped out on me, and tonight I start taking effexorXL 37.5mg along w/ the toprol and xanax.  Anyone been on this combo before and had any luck, or bad experiences? Thanks in advance.

Brandy,

Don't know about the Toprol, but I do use Effexor and Xanax together with pretty good success. Effexor has been my godsend. Yep you heard right that is what I said, THANK GOD FOR EFFEXOR!  I'm struggling with double depression (MDD&dysthymia) and a raging case of GAD with panic disorder.  Hmmm...this makes me wonder if I should try Toprol...how does that work for you and your anxiety issues??

Let us know how you do on this! B)

I take Effexor - it is most effective for me at higher dosages (300 mg) when the dopamine factor kicks in. Can mess with your appetite sometimes tho. But DOES NOT have those "adverse sexual side effects" that a lot of SSRI's have XD

My body is also rly sensitive to effexor leaving the body - it has a SHORT short half life, I ended up splitting the dosage & taking it twice a day for best results. I totally feel it when I miss a dose or even half a dose - but it is not the WORST feeling in the world (just WEIRD)

Lexapro at 40mg was completely pointless after 2 mos - for me. It pooped out & in fect made my anxiety worse O.o

Holy Crap, from two panick attacks a day to non....in 3 whole years?  OK that's it I'm SO looking into beta blockers....... :)

BTW, I just read your comments in the Effexor thread, don't worry about all the Effexor scare stories, I still think it's an incredible drug for those of us who are incredibly depressed and need our seratonin!!  ;)   Relax, but just so you know as far as my experience I thought effexor did absolutley nothing for me until the 1.5 month mark and 150mg (the dosage I'm still taking) and then all of a sudden I was like BAM this drug has changed my whole life!

hmmm...lets see i think i was on 37.5 for 10 days ( no probs except jitters/dizziness) followed by 75 mg for 2 weeks at which i started getting discouraged.  Called pdoc.  Switch to 112.5 for 5 days and onto 150.  Only been on 150 for about 3 weeks but holy crap......just wait......all at once you'll realize it's happening.  I may want to move up to 225 to get the norepinephrine action.....any experience with that???

sending good thoughts...... ;)   :)

I TOTALLY ECHO THIS SENTIMENT.

I think ppl are scared off by the short half-life and the effexor withdrawal horror stories but ANY med has its share of horror stories. Effexor has been the only anti-depressant to be consistently effective in treating my chronic depression. And UNLIKE the SSRI's there are none of those annoying sexual side effects. For me, Effexor didn'y TRULY prove its worth until after the 225mg mark, but you never just start at that dosage. I think that was after 6 months.

I am glad to hear about the sexual s/e's.  On lexapro I feel like cardboard and could go years w/ out it.

You know what's almost worse? Having the *desire* but the complete inability to achieve orgasm no matter what, there could be a sledgehammer down there. Yes, this is what most SSRIs do to me but not Effexor XD I'd almost rather take the no desire at all than that.

I asked my doc about increasing my lex from 20mg to 30, but she said 20mg's is as high as you can go.  I'm wondering why she said that to me if there are people who take more than 20?  Lexapro worked really good for me, but in the past 6 months or so, it has crapped out.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Well unles they upated the PI info the max dosage was actually 40 mg. If Lexapro doesn't do anything at 40mg, its not going to do anything at higher dosages except give you more side effects. I started at 10 mg, worked up to 40mg- after 2 months at 40mg it was a complete bust.

Also I forgot to add that yes, I guess I do have exp w/ the "norepinephrine action" since I've been at 300mg Effexor for...6 months now? I think it benefits me better than teh usual SSRIs.

As far as side effects go, at the higher dosage:

P.S. the weird tongue numbness is a pretty common side effect from what I've heard.  I wonder if it ever goes away?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeah, I wonder too. It's more annoying than anything else and sure puts a damper on my appetite. XP

Oops, also I forgot to mention the ringing in the ears. That can happen, more of an annoying, intermittent thing than anything else.

Also, ur low libido - couldn't that be attributed to the depression itself? Not saying that teh pillz can't cause it too 'cause we all know they do.

I think as far as the low sex drive is concerned that it's really a combo of both the depression and the med's.  It really sucks b/c it's like in order to get better, you have to give up so many things that used to make you happy.  I wish there was a magic pill that made us better overnight w/ no s/e's.

LOL NO SHIT for SERIOUS XDXD but (RIGHT NOW anyway) my combo of Effexor and Adderall comes pretty damn close (crosses fingers in hope)

I have been taking beta blockers for my heart condition for 17 years, and recently switched from tenormin to sotalol. I'm also taking effexor xr (300 mg 2x/day) and xanax (.5 mg 2x day). All of this for my GAD, tension, and depression

I've been having panic attacks recently, having checked with my cardio to make sure it wasn't heart related. I was doing so well for almost a year, but lately I think I may be tolerant of my xanax...I've heard that is a possibility. If you still have problems, I would suggest upping the effexor first (most commonly) but in the future you may need to switch to higher doses of xanax. I wouldn't recommend upping the beta blocker (although with these panic attacks it would be nice!!! I've got an implantible defibrillator that is gonna shock me because I'm having panic attacks!! hehe)

Just something to keep in mind--these benzo...s (sp?) create dependence and tolerance; and depending on your doc they might not really care: They just don't want you to become an "addict." I'm fighting my doc to change my xanax to something stronger, it's been 2 1/2 years on it.

Best of luck to you! You're on the right path in my opinion!

I use effexor and xanax. Im also on adderal. Im currently under a tremendous amount of stress. But im still suffering from the depression and panic attacks daily. My mood swings are out of this world. Im either depressed, or pissed at the world. My doctor won't up the effexor because I can't get my blood pressure under control. Im going absolutely crazy. I don't know if I want to hit someone or cry. God it sucks! I just want to feel normal again. Anyone have any suggestions?
