koa
So I was on a different web forum yesterday and made a casual comment that I didn't think too much about. Now there are about fifteen people attacking me! I just want the thread to die! What if people keep attacking me! I hate the internet.
confused
Misunderstandings are easy to have on-line. If you are sorry apologize if not defend your position or lay low til it dies down?
jt07
The internet is like the TV. You can change the channel, switch it off, or unplug it. I'm assuming that no one on that forum knows who you are IRL. I wouldn't get too involved or too emotionally invested if I were you.
Guest Vapourware
I've been there, done that...and I think you have to gauge whether you did say something inappropriate, or if people are picking fights by deliberately twisting your words. If it's the former, then it's best to apologise. Usually, an apology will stop people from attacking you. If it's the latter, you have to decide whether you want to defend yourself, or if it's best to step away so you don't get upset further.
llama44
Oh boy can I relate! It's not fun is it? I feel bad for you. You can PM me anytime if you need to talk or vent.
bpladybug
sometimes it easiest thing is an apology other times just IGNORE that thread, take a break it amazes me when people are aggressive or rude online in a way they would not be in real life
Damagedg00d5
OMG I just posted about this very same thing before I saw this. Fucking hilarious!
hallowedink
People are often way more aggressive/rude/confrontational online than in real life. Sometimes it's just better to take a step back - either apologise (you don't have to mean it, just do it to get them off your back) or leave the thread for a while and let things cool down. I personally think it's really foul that people think that they can treat people like shit because they're anonymous online, but others don't think that way, and what can you do? koa
I don't think what I said was wrong, and I don't feel like defending myself, so I'm just going to ignore it. I'm sure in a couple of days it will get buried under a pile of new messages. I agree that people can be so much more aggressive online than in real life. I've done it too, honestly. I think the internet can bring out a set of behaviors that are kind of scary! It can be pretty difficult for me not to obsess about stuff like this. I am trying to avoid the site but it is one of the sites that I troll to occupy my time. I was feeling really obsessive about it last night.... then I remembered someone told me that one thing that helps people with PTSD (which I'm not saying that I have) is to play Tetris.... So I played Tetris for like an hour and it was totally therapeutic! I woke up feeling better this morning. Not sure how to get in touch with the moderators on this other site. BIMBO
I have an on line group like this too. I like going there cause its small but I often feel I'm the only one to be honest with people, although I'm always respectful and tactful. It's like they'd rather all send cyber hugs and live in fantasy land than give people good honest advice. I couldn't cope if it wasn't for CB. Even if I'm not posting, just reading others being real is comforting.
