Hi. I'm a Crazy Board and Geodon virgin. I was first on Geodon (60mg then up to 80mg) 1x a day back in January. My doc wanted to increase me to 2x a day but my insurance ended. A week ago I just went back on the Geodon since I qualified for medication assistance. Because I got my meds from the drug company I had to go straight up to 80mg 1x a day. I've attempted to take it once in the morning and once in the evening and that's where the problem seems to come in. I never have any issues taking it at night. When I take it in the morning like I did today, I sometimes feel hypomanic. Today I felt very "racey" and just couldn't concentrate. I forced myself to take about a 2 hour nap in the afternoon to sleep off the feeling. Anyone have similar issues? I'm guessing I just have to stick it out. I've read that it does get better but it's just nice hearing from someone who has actually be on it. It has definitely made a difference though. I've been more motivated, can leave the house, have started volunteering at the SPCA, etc... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was on Geodon temporarily, and it increased my heart rate to a number high enough that I needed routine EKGs. When the EKGs started to become abnormal, I stopped it (well, my pdoc and i both agreed to change it to a different med).

If you want to decrease your dose, Geodon has a funny little trick. You get about half strength absorption if you take it on an empty stomach, as compared to the much higher absorption rate after a good-sized meal. I definitely notice a difference if I don't eat at least 350 calories; 500-1000 calories are ideal.

I would ask your psych about what dose s/he really wants you on, and if it's less than 80mg ask if the food might be a good solution.

Hey Taz. Thanks for the response. So you're saying if I was to take Geodon on an empty stomach the effects should be lessened? I just started taking it with food about 3 days ago. I usually take it with a bowl of cereal. Thanks for the response. If you could clarify the food issue I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Here's the abstract from a paper about about Geodon, food, and bioavailability : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19026256

  • 2 weeks later...

When I first went on Geodon, it made me hypomanic for about a week. Then the hypomania went away and I was left with nothing but side effects like being too sleepy/not being able to wake up during the day, etc... but then again my pdoc never mentioned that you had to take it on a 500-1000 calorie meal either.

I had the same problem. Extreme sedation. I only took it at night. If Iried to take it during the day, I was a complete zombie. To top it off, it took forever for this side effect to go away -- like 9 months. I finally went off of it and couldn't be happier. Geodon and I did not mix well.

Me too. And headaches. Sucks because I lost weight on it and finally felt happy and less OCD. But Latuda is better for me personally. I like em both the best.

When I first started ziprasidone [sorry, but I hate the name "Geodon"], I also found it quite activating. It made me wonder if I had flipped into hypomania, but I think it was just extra energy after feeling deflated for so long. Perhaps you should do a mood tracker to see how your moods are, and also see if your pdoc has any samples so you can go on a lower dose. When I was on ziprasidone, my pdoc had loads of samples which made it easier to titrate.

yeah I've just started using ziprasidone around 8 months ago, it doesn't sedate me and works with my symptoms but I do get side effects, usually within 2 hours after taking it I start to feel depressed to the point where I need to sleep otherwise I have a minor panic attack and have trouble breathing, these feelings usually go away after a 2 hour nap, but I sometimes experience them at night before I sleep. It has gotten much better from when I first began using the drug and I'm also using zoloft now.

Its a really inconvenient as I cant do much until around 2pm and quite uncomfortable process.

I've also tried zyprexa before using this drug and that was horrible so Im reluctant to try anything new as the process was intense switching meds.. has anyone else experienced this as a side effect or is this just anxitey?
