Sixstringkate
Finally settled in to my new meds (Prozac + Wellbutrin) and all the sudden I'm having wicked heartburn every morning. It literally feels like my pills get stuck in my throat and the acid comes out Takes hours to get it to go away. Milk, Tums, generic antacids from Walmart, all do their part, but basicly I just have to tough it out. Could this be medicine related, or am I just getting old and broken? melissaw72
Are you eating when you taken them? I am on same meds in AM and the prozac will do a number on me if I dont eat with it. I would call pdoc if it persists because you dont want to develop a problem with your esophagus/stomach.
olga
I think food might be the answer. Eat some breakfast, which might include yogurt or milk (cow, soy, almond, whatever), and after you have eaten, try taking the pills. It's good to have fruit in your breakfast, but you might want to leave out the acidic fruits like grapefruit until you get this situation straightened out. I also think it's a good idea to discuss the problem with your pdoc. olga

Reason being it gets the meds built up in the blood, causing a reaction (depends on what meds and how much grapefruit). I questioned this myself, and tried eating a grapefruit. After I ate the grapefruit I was VERY groggy and could tell something had built up in my blood (based on past dosing experiments with pdoc). A lot of info on internet about it. If you read the articles, they are very specific about which medications interact with grapefruit. I'm on 5 prescription meds and eat half a grapefruit every day, and my drugs are working just fine. olga
Sixstringkate
I suppose I should have mentioned I take my pills after a whopping big bowl of Raisin Bran every morning... God, I AM old. Anyway, the Dr told me the same thing every doctor ever has ever told me about everything. "Um... that's not really supposed to happen." Helpful. Really helpful. olga
If you are not taking something for the heartburn, maybe you could try Nexium or Prilosec, or something like that? You take Prilosec half an hour before you eat---I'm not sure about the other meds in this class. You're right---the doctor was NOT very helpful to you on this issue. sigh. olga
crtclms
I used Prilosec because I have a hiatal (sp?) hernia. You take it once a day. I really like it, and have noticed no side effects. I was practically living on Tums at one point in my life, and the calcium was damaging my kidneys. I take a higher amount than most, because the backwash is just so bad, and they were worried about esophageal damage. I wish my gdoc would give me a written prescription, it is SO expensive OTC. I take 3 times the dosage recommended on the box (per my doctor's instructions). But, it does work.

Gastro wrote a prescription for lansoprazole (forget the name--mabye prevacid?), in a higher dose, so it is now Rx and I can afford it.
olga
crtclms, why won't your GP give you a prescription? My husband takes Prilosec, and gets a 90-day supply for about $14. (Through our prescription plan. ) I think those boxes with 14 pills in them are $11.99 retail. My doctor just has to be careful to write "Prilosec OTC" because it is an over-the-counter med. Maybe you could ask again, and explain how much it is costing you to buy it "retail?" olga
notfred
My plan will not pay for OTC meds but the 300 mg pills of Zantac (150 mg is OTC) are considered a prescription strength dose, requiring a prescription.
crtclms
Hmm, prescription strength is the key? My gdoc always tells me to take OTC meds, but has never prescribed them. I will ask her.
