long time not sleeping

Recommended Posts

Ive had trouble sleeping now for many many years but over the last year it seems to be less and less, i average now maybe 10-15 hours in a 5 day week. I take stuff for sleeping it just dont work. when i do go to sleep its full of my old nightmares of things ive tried to forget.....I try to drink and stay active but lately my doc has changed my meds and i dont feel right, i ask him about it and its the usuall speech, give them a chance to work(bullshit) the crap dont work, now i feel down sluggish, and still cant sleep, my thoughts have gone back to daker things from the ole days and i dont want that shit to start again. i feel trapped and nobody seems to want to fix the problem, they just want me to keep takeing this crap and hope for the best.

Since you have a PTSD diagnosis, if I remember correctly, I think they make a med to prevent REM sleep to prevent dreams from occurring. Maybe you could throw this out there to a doc and see if they'd be willing to put you on it so you could get some sleep?

I've had difficulty sleeping for about 25 years now. Either I can't relinquish control over my body and fight falling alseep (waking up every time I start to drift away) or the thoughts in my head get so loud and run so out of control that it's nearly impossible to relax. I've tried every medication from seroquel to ambien to help me fall asleep, and nothing does the trick. Well, a few mg of xanax at bedtime did the trick, but I don't take that anymore. I've even tried hypnosis tapes for progressive relaxation to distract the thoughts in my head, but it only worked a couple of times and my mind figured out a way to beat it.

A couple of weeks ago I started on adderall to help my daytime apathy and tiredness and concentration and focus issues, and I find that while I can fall asleep ok with 200mg of trazadone, I wake up often in the night and often wake up at weird hours like 4 am. Wide awake. I used to fall asleep at 4am, not get up that early, lol!

It seems like I've had sleep problems my whole life. The exception is when I was on seroquel. But I don't know if pdocs will rx it just for sleep.

Have you tried the whole line of sleep meds like: ambien, lunesta, sonata, etc?

Benadryl?

These days I'm able to fall asleep just fine for about 4 hours and then Im waking up every 2 hours until I get out of bed.

I don't know anything about PTSD nightmares...I'm sorry you have that.

So far as I know, there are people who have been prescribed a low dose (c.25-50mg) for sleep. It would probably depend on your Pdoc, as to whether he will prescribe it.

I've had trouble falling asleep all my life, and no meds seemed to touch it. But my Pdoc put me on Lofepramine about a month ago, and it has given me a much better quality of sleep, so even if I don't sleep any longer than my usual 4-5 hours a night, I do sleep better. If I need help getting to sleep, with my doctor's permission, I take a double dose of Zopiclone. But that's only for emergencies - usually when I'm really emotionally unstable (that's when I have nightmares and will be unable to fall asleep or stay asleep).

I don't have any recommendations regarding PTSD nightmares, I'm afraid. I'm sorry that you're having to deal with that.

Is there any chance that you could get a referral to a sleep specialist/clinic/something like that? They might be able to help you out with this.

over the years my doc has tried many sleeping pills, but for the last few years its trazadone. i take 400 mg a night...when i take it that is, it dont usually work to well. sometimes ill just take 300 mgs. other times ill take 500. nothing so far really works. i cant get my mind to slow down plus i think i dread sleeping because of all the nightmares i have from being a Marine..

I've always had trouble sleeping. Things that have worked for me in the past- doxepin, amitriptyline, melatonin, OTC sleep aids sometimes had to be added for me. Now I'm on rememeron which relaxes me so much it is much easier to get to sleep.

none of the otc stuff has ever worked, some of the ones you mentioned i have tried, they worked some but not enough. Surely there is something that will make me sleep safely.... Im very tired and i really do need to rest, i just cant.

I was combining the OTC meds with my prescription meds, with my pdoc's approval, of course. Seroquel also can be used for sleep. Please list all the meds you've tried if you want to get better feedback. It's kinda hard suggesting something when we have no idea what you've tried, what doseages, etc...

Dude, you don't have to feel like that. Looking at your med list you have a long way to go before you run out of options, you just have to hang in there until you find the right ones. Please go to the ER if you feel strongly about not wanting to live. I did and got put in a nice place for a while and then they passed me onto a good pdoc who got me on the right meds for me. I've been battling mental illness since I was in high school (I'm 25 now) and have been on the med go round since I was 20.

HANG I THERE!

Trazodone is a funny one.

It doesn't really make you sleep better... It gives you a "window" of sleepiness to try to capitalize on.
