nicola77
I've been on prozac for about 3 or 4 months and it was helping for a while but for the last few weeks I feel so depressed I struggle to get out of bed everyday I just want to sleep all the time I don't see the point in anything I have no energy and I'm just generaly depressed so can prozac stop working? I feel like I'm taking nothing because I feel like the old me before prozac I'm currently on 20mg
hallowedink
I'm sorry that you're struggling. For some people meds have stopped working/lost effectiveness, so it is possible. It could be that Prozac isn't for you. But equally it could be that you just need a higher dose. As far as I know, 20mg is the lowest therapeutic dose, so you have some wiggle room there. At any rate, I would say that this is definitely grounds for you to make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible to discuss this and hopefully get you feeling better. bluelikejazz
Sometimes antidepressants can stop working. Could you go see the doctor who prescribed it? They may want to adjust the dosage or switch medications.
NottheMama
20mg is pretty low, they had me moving up at the 2 month mark. But I'll tell you, it may be the prozac, I'm at 60mg now and all I want to do is sleep and be left alone. I have no motivation to get a damn thing done and I've been on prozac for 7 months. Talk to your doctor, its not supposed to feel this way.

scatty
You likely need to go up in dose. I hope your pdoc can help you. If you are feeling that bad, call pdoc and he may be able to fix this over the phone. No need to suffer. Good luck!
melissaw72
For me Prozac does seem not to work as well at times (i get the weepy, sad feeling only prozac helps). My pdoc has me decrease the dose for about a week, then increase it back up to the regular level. Sometimes you can build a tolerance to this. mmasters
I take 20mg, went to 30 it worked a little better, then pooped out, went to 40 worked a little better once again then pooped out, then I could orgasm... So...long story short I just ended back up at 20mg, it's subtle and doesn't necessarily keep me from experiencing depression but it does keep me from experiencing severe depression which is the important thing. Birdee
Yup. It's called the "prozac poop out". Here's what Mayo Clinic has to say about it: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/antidepressants/AN01312
Nutty By Nature
I think your dose is too low. Prozac can stop working but it usually takes YEARS for that to happen.
tryp
I think your dose is too low. Prozac can stop working but it usually takes YEARS for that to happen. Not necessarily - every time I have been on an SSRI, it's crapped out within a few months.
Cherriichan
Prozac has recently stopped working for me, and I am back where I was before I started medication, and probably worse. My dose is tiny though, so it may need raising but I don't see my pdoc for another month. I'm only on 10mg ( half the therapeutic dose), so I hope things change if the dose increases. I hope pdoc appointment went well and you got your dosage of Prozac storted out.

chimpmaster
There are mixed medical views on ssri poop out. I personally haven't had it with prozac. In fact I was on it for years, a p-doc changed me to remeron, and then I went back on prozac after 3 months and its working again. Im on 60mg so dosage could be an issue. So back to your question - yes prozac can poop out, but this can often be avoided with dosage adjustments. Also, if it dose poop out, changing to another sari is often effective.
