It takes about six to eight weeks for Prozac to take effect usually. Two weeks is not a long time, so it's hard to know whether it will help you or not. My advice would be to continue taking it and report to your doctor about how you are feeling. Your doctor will be able to advise you on whether or not it is effective.

It varies from person to person. Didn't help mine. I didn't stay on it long enough to see if it worked. It made me worse in the beginning so I begged them to take me off it after about three weeks, I think. That was the second time I was on it, the first time I don't think it made it WORSE, but it didn't work. It made me weird so I went off it. That being said, I don't tolerate SSRI's AT ALL. None of them.

So what works for someone else might not work for you. Or what didn't work for someone else may work for you. Hopefully it does.

It made me feel worse for the first month but slowly I think it's helped. Friends and family have noticed more of change than I have. As The Emperor said, a drug that works for one might not work for the other but unless you have any concerning side effects I recommend you try to keep taking it for a couple of months, you never know it may really help you, give it time.

I'll echo everyone else here in saying that Prozac takes a significantly greater amount of time to work than other antidepressants. That being said, given your unresponsiveness, I'd ask your psychiatrist about adding an atypical antipsychotic to your regimen. I'd ask for Zyprexa in your case, as it works syngeristically with your Prozac and is well studied in treating depression that is otherwise unresponsive. However, you have to really watch your diet as Zyprexa can cause weight gain, so I would work out a low carb diet you can stick to before you start and while you're on it really fight those sugar cravings. Good luck!

Matthewmurphyj, you have now made several statements on CBs suggesting specific medications, or classes of medication to our members as *the* choice for treating a particular problem. This may seem a small point, but for the protection of the boards, it would be better if you couched your statements in less authoritative language, and gave information based on your own experiences.

As it is, it sounds like you want to tell members to tell their pdocs how to treat them, and I can promise you that will not go over well with a lot of pdocs. Even if you are in the medical field, we discourage members from operating in their professional capacity, and rather to participate as an educated peer.

Zyprexa worked for your. That is personal information that you have to give, so have at it.

But you are suggesting Zyprexa as an add-on for a medication that hasn't failed, yet. The OP has only been taking prozac a few week. Do you see that your suggestion might be considered a little premature?

Maybe it would be better to follow the pdoc's instructions until there is actually enough time to determine if it does or doesn't work, before slinging random medication names at his pdoc. A medication that takes 6-8 weeks to work, but is not working at two weeks, does not merit an AAP as an add-on.

ETA: Fuck spelling and grammar, I'm going to bed.
