ahalo
About 4 yrs ago my brother was prescribed thorazine for insomnia. I know this is frowned upon, but at the time I was unmedicated and had just had my first hypomanic experience. And I wasn't sleeping. So I took a thorazine pill bc it says it was for sleep, so why not?? Ha. Anyway, not only did I have the best sleep in forever but the whole next day I was totally chill. Not zombie like but just calm. How would I go about bringing this up to my pdoc as a possiibility or should I even? The Latuda I take does not effect me that I can tell, I didn't start feeling ok until my Lamictal and Prozac kicked in but I'm still anxious and restless most of the time. ManWitPlan
lol i'd try not to go on thorazine. Tardive dyskensia isn't fun. And theres a high risk for it causing that. But if you talk to your doc and he says yes then go ahead.
Velvet Elvis
The the risk of any kind of EPS is very low at the doses used for sleep. I'd bring it up. Low dose seroquel also works quite well in that capacity. I took thorazine for sleep for a while and was less than impressed with it.
notfred
Try "I have been reading about thorazine and that it can be good for ____. Would that be a possibility ?" I would only take it if the dose is low to limit significant side effects. Higher doses of thorazine should dampen down some of the effects of Vyvanse. I would suspect the sedating effects of thorazine would wane over time so a one time trial is not going to tell you if it would be effective for you. albertolobat
Haven't you tried any of the more traditional meds used to treat insomnia? Maybe Ambien. I am not sure but an AP may be too strong a medicine to be used as a sleep helper.
ahalo
Have tried Doxepin Remeron Trazadone Lunesta Ambien Seroquel Zyprexa Nothing else touches it, as you see I've tried a lot.
Guest
Why not just tell your pdoc the truth? I find that works for me. If you already know for a fact that Thorazine works well for you, I don't see where sharing that information is going to be bad. You took your brother's medication once. Sure, you shouldn't have done it but you did and it's done. You haven't done it since and you don't have a history of doing things like this. I'd go with telling the truth. gizmo
I agree with sylvan. The truth always works best. It took me two years to be upfront and honest with my pdoc about issues I've had in the past with Xanax ( this was several months ago) and he never judged me about it. I told him because I wanted his help in ensuring that I wouldn't take that medication again, and to make sure we were totally open and honest when I brought up any medication ideas that I'd had about treatment. this was especially helpful when we talked about me getting on stimulants. He felt he could try them on me because I would be honest with him if something negative would happen. It felt good to know he trusted me.
Swamp56
Why not just tell your pdoc the truth? I find that works for me. This. It's not like your psychiatrist is going to punish you.
joachim
it's been less than a year, but after a discussion with a buddy who shares my dx, I told pdoc I wondered if I was having some mixed episodes (very weird) and she presribed thorazine...sorta freaked me out and I asked her if it was gonna make me (hand motions and facial expression) and she said no...low dose probably 10-50mg, and I've only taken 20mg, which did seem to make an improvement someone told me their relative was prescribed it for unrelenting hiccup just fyi...don't know if this helps anything ...stephanie
steves
i believe it is approved for insomnia, but it won't last forever. Eventually you get used to it and it stops being sedating.
ahalo
That's a bummer. But it does help my anxiety too. We'll see if that fades as well. :/
Crazyfroglady
Have you ever considered Temazepam (Restoril) I find that knocks me out without any grogginess or lethargy the next day. It's as close to natural falling asleep and waking up that i've found.
CrankyMe
Meds are so weird. I was up to 150 mg of thorazine and it didn't touch my insomnia, but did make me zombie-like the following day. Luckily my insomnia eventually resolved on its own. And I agree with the advice already given, just talk to your pdoc about it.
