Stimulant Crash

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else experience this so badly that they have to go off of their medication? I've been off and on ADHD stimulants for a few years and finally went back on Ritalin about a month ago. The crash is not as bad as say Concerta but I am still noticing a pretty bad change in my mood when it wears off. It's like when I take my medicine I feel fine and then it starts to wear off and I start thinking about suicide and all kinds of stuff. I haven't taken it in 2 weeks because of this. Has anyone else experienced this problem? There are times when I might need my medicine but I don't want to have to deal with the crash everyday. Is there a better medication out there or does this side effect go away over time?

Have you tried Concerta and then taking an immediate release Ritalin in the afternoon? That's what my pdoc suggests for the crash. It makes it not so bad for me.

I take Adderall XR (the generic) and take 30 mg twice a day. I take the second dose about an hour before I would expect the crash to start. When the second dose is wearing off, I am about to go to bed, so it helps me get to sleep. Then I sleep through the worst part of the crash.

My son took Vyvanse once a day, and had an immediate release Adderall to take in the afternoon if the crash was hitting him hard. (He has decided to stop taking it for now, because he doesn't like the way it makes him feel.)

Maybe I should try something like that. I take Ritalin three times a day but it wears off before I am ready to go to sleep. I will mention this to my doctor.

Your doctor may prescribe you something like Ritalin 10mg FR in the evenings, (also I was on it, it was great and the best was no comedown!!!)

These can help reduce the comedown effects: [Do ]

tick_circle.pngarrow-single-right-green.png Eat breakfast and something like a banana in the day (Note: Eating in the day while the drug is still working may reduce the effects)

tick_circle.pngarrow-single-right-green.png Get enough sleep

tick_circle.pngarrow-single-right-green.png Drink water

tick_circle.pngarrow-single-right-green.png You need to eat alot before the comedown, (So say you always get the crash around 6PM, you would need to eat before that and/or around that time)... -> Eating food at crash makes a huge difference.

Things that may increase comedown effects: [Don't Do]

cross.pngarrow-single-right-red.png Sleep deprivation

cross.pngarrow-single-right-red.png Caffeine effects may very, for some people taking caffeine with MPH can just cause "anxiety, panic attacks, rapid heart, etc"

cross.pngarrow-single-right-red.png Not eating anything in the whole day

cross.pngarrow-single-right-red.png Cold (for some reason sometimes if its freezing the effects may backfire and make you feel crap) [ Like, what I am saying is don't be like freezing cold]

Other Info:

information-balloon.pngarrow-turn-000-left.png Orange Juice,Grapefruit juice, etc will "may very" on the effects (decrease effect)

information-balloon.pngarrow-turn-000-left.png Crashes (comedowns) may very , and for example you could have this week and every evening you get massive crash, but next couple of weeks you barley notice it,etc

Ritalin 10mg FR in the evenings time (around your comedown time) is great

Temperature may sometimes effect of Concerta/ Ritalin

I take adderall twice a day, and never after 1 pm. I notice I start crashing around 4-5 pm. By 7:30, I'm looking at the clock, feeling like I can't do a damn thing, and waiting until it's time to go to bed. Basically, I feel like my "old" self again, just with the added benefit of knowing how good I feel during the day and how much better I feel when I'm taking the medication. It's a double-edged sword, because I love how the medication makes me feel good and healthy and able to do things during the day, but the comedown is such a big change that it makes me feel like my medicated state is just total shit.

I'm gonna bring it up at my next appt.

I can't stress enough about the eating and the water . A lot of times you might think the meds are making you feel bad but it is because you need nutrition . .Your mind can only realease so much seratonin and dopamine .It is possible to get to a point where no matter how much of a c.n.s. you take you won't feel it and you will be down and feeling bad. This tends to be the problem with stimulants and where you draw the line one day might not be good for you a few days later . The feeling of being in control and able to do things you want is such a hard feeling to let go .I don't like being without any energy or being unable to concentrate long enough to do anything .With the "up" there will come a "down" but if you eat and I swear if you can just exercise a few minutes a day maybe some push ups or some simple exercises you can do anywhere .If you can learn to do this every day or so you would not believe how much more energy you will feel It will help with the crash .When you are hungry it seems so much worse to come down . Your up time will also feel better if you eat right .If you exercise you will will start to feel better overall i guess it is from the natural endorphines your body produces .It made a big difference in my life and how I felt.and eventually how I looked .
