Too many pills?

Recommended Posts

I wonder how many pills is too much?  I take about 5 pills a day, not including birth control or any headache med's, but I feel like sometimes I'm doing my body more harm than I am good.  I'm totally freaked that one of these days my liver is gonna crap out on me.

Yeah, I think we're all taking more than 5 around here!

You can go to drugs.com and other places on the Web and check interactions.  Be sure to include your birth control pill (if you take one) and painkillers like aspirin or your headache meds.  It might reassure you somewhat to see that there aren't any bad interactions.

Also, your pdoc or your primary care doctor should be checking your liver function regularly.

The first time I checked, they listed a serious interaction between two of my meds---so THAT'S why I had the chest pains and palpitations!!  Called the doctors involved and did some switching. You should investigate them all and not expect the doctors to tell you everything.

Because a lot of them just don't know...

Part of my problem is that I am a MAJOR hypochondriac- re:neurotic ;)   so I get paranoid about everything I put into my body.  My liver panels are all normal, I just wonder for how long?  It is reassuring to know others take a lot more pills than I do and are still ok.

While some of our drugs CAN cause liver problems, there is no indication that taking an average drug will generally or cumulatively cause liver problems.  Trust your liver panels.  If they are clear you are good.

...Ahem, except Tylenol.  There is building evidence that regular use of even normal doses can damage the liver for some people.  And avoid using it with alcohol, or taking large quantities for extended times.

There are lots of things that can alter your liver function -- I don't worry particularly about my meds and my liver. I suppose ultimately my liver will show effects, but without the meds I'm not going to live long enough to discover what might show up when I reach old age.

Like all issues, it's a question of balancing out the benefit and the potential risks. Generally, in my life, the benefits almost always outweight potential long-term risks.

Chill, I take 9 prescription pills a day, not including birth control or fish oil or vitamins. Also not including the days where I need ephedrine or Xanax. If you need it you need it. As Fiona said, generally the benefits usually outweights the side effects.

You'r right.  If your not gonna be around long enough to see if your liver craps out on you b/c of MI, you might as well take the happy pills and be......happy! ;)
