clonazepam taper and withdrawal

Recommended Posts

hi all,

i was on 1mg clonazepam (0.5 x 2/day) for about 2 years, then on 2 mg (0.5 x 4/day) for 4-5 months. then i decided to get off of it. over a period of 2 months i went back to 1mg then i was taking 0.5mg. my pdoc got all super excited and announced that i should stop it altogether. on the last script from her it reads "0.25-0.5mg/day." so i took 0.25 for 3-4 days then stopped.

i had to take 2 days off work; this is my second day off work, 3rd day of withdrawal. i have absolutely no concentration, my startle reflex is out of whack, i have heart palpitations, i can barely sleep (i wake up 2,000 times a night) and i'm getting pretty bad rebound anxiety. mostly what's annoying is the lack of concentration. being in research i work with texts and statistics and i made so many stupid math mistakes, and can't write, it's driving me nuts. i was looking for my phone contacts in my phone's music player. i was like, where's my dad's phone number? all i can see are artist names.. oh wait.

anyway, what exactly withdrawal symptoms i'm getting is not really that important, what's important to me is when can i expect for them to stop? will it be 1 week, 2 weeks? i need to go back to work... can someone share their experience?

PS: i know maybe i did the whole taper thing wrong, but i was told to stop and my pdoc is on vacation so i see her in a month and if i start taking it again i won't have enough pills to last me until her return anyway. what do, what do...

My pdoc said this med lasts a LONG time in your system, so you wont really feel any effect of it being gone (from weaning down) for maybe 3-4 weeks (it takes that long to get out of the blood, every time you titrate down). He also has me weaning down very slow, and made a point to tell me to do so, and not stop cold turkey.

It would seem you tapered too fast from .5 to nothing so restarting at .5 and working your way down to 0 slowly would be one way to go. Most docs when they go on vacation have someone covering for them. I would call your docs office and see what the procedure is to get additional meds when your doc is away.
