Self-Harm Showing Up in Elementary Schools: Study

Recommended Posts

"One of our main messages is: This happens earlier than you think. And then it's: How are kids at different ages doing this and what do you need to look for?" said study author Benjamin Hankin, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Denver.

I don't know if this is news to anyone else.

My daughter used to bang her head against the wall. I didn't know that was considered self-injury.

Hmm. I used to bite myself when I was upset. My forearms. I also did it during my first mixed episode. But other than that, stopped before college.

And I still slap my head when I think I've done something stupid, hard enough that it hurts. I'm always pissed at myself as soon as I do it, because OW. I can remember the first time I did that, too.

Wow, I just had a hardcore flashback. I have chills. I feel like I just unearthed something important. Sorry to do it in this thread.

I bit myself too. And I'd get hold of the edge of a fingernail with my teeth and pull as much of the nail off as I could. There were other things. I had no idea that stuff like that counted as self-injury, although, as I think about it, it makes perfect sense and seems like a build up the might naturally culminate in doing worse things to yourself when you got older and could get hold of tools or weapons or were just better coordinated.

Sigh. It's always delightful to gain further insight into just how fucked up I was when I was really little.

I SI around 8th-9th grade (started then) by taking a hammer and pounding my arm and shin to the point of so much bruising it looked like child abuse. I was trying to break my arm and leg. Fortunately I never did break anything I used a hammer on and regret doing it all.

I used to bite my tongue/lips as a little kid (I still do, sometimes). It was really comforting to me, to know that I could hurt myself as opposed to only ever being hurt.

I don't think that my childhood was all that typical from an emotional development standpoint, though, so I'm not sure how much I qualify.
