Doctor on Vacation

Recommended Posts

I am going to Toronto tomorrow night, and so on Sunday night I sent a refill request to my doctor for my Adderall prescription. Come Monday afternoon (around 4:00pm) I hadn't heard anything, so I called them and asked if it was ready yet. The nurse on the phone said that my doctor is on vacation, and that I should have given them a week or two to find a substitute prescriber (what?). I asked if she had anyone filling in for her during the vacation, and the response was that yes she does, but given the "type of medication" that it was possible that it wouldn't be renewed in time.

What are my options here? The gist I got was that it was possible another doc would write the script, but that since they dont like writing for CIIs, that I might just have to go without it. This seems crazy to me, whether I'm on Adderall or Lipitor, a substitute prescriber should write for it as long as it has been an established med that I am stabilized on.

I'm afraid that I might have to just not go to Toronto, as my doc returns from vacation the day after I leave. Does anyone have any experience or advice on this problem?

It never hurts to try. The substitute doc should be able to verify that you are prescribed this.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am a wreck and completely freaking out.

If I go without the Adderall, I'll go into massive withdrawal. If I don't go, I won't go into withdrawal, but I'll be out nearly $2,000 (maybe more) for the flight and hotel cancellation.

Tomorrow is zero hour, and I should hear if a substitute doc agrees to write for it. I just don't get the nurse's remark that it "might not be renewed given the type of medication it is." What difference does it make? I've been on it for over 4 years. Arggh, so frustrating. I hate the stigma attached to stims.

How long are you going to be gone? It might be easier to get another pdoc to give you a weeks worth than a larger amount. Then you could get the rest when you get back from your regular pdoc. Or, given the time frame problems, could you call your GP, explain what is going on and maybe get him/her to give you enough to last until you can get back?

I Would call GP also and avoid withdrawal.

Called the GP (who also was on vacation, but is coming back tomorrow) The sub doc wrote the script for several days after I would have run out (playing it safe I guess?) but ultimately not acceptable. I was able to get on a later flight, so I pray my GP will take mercy on me.

If I was you I would not call him if hes on vacation.

If you went on vacation the last thing you want is people phoning you up asking for a script.

Any doctor (pdoc or GP or whatever) should have someone that is on-call for them when they are on vacation. You call the regular number and you should get an answering service or phonemail or something along those lines.

Agreed. if they dont have anyone on call, then they have to cover themselves (from my perspective). IMO that is their problem by not finding coverage.

That might be fine if you are a clerk at 7/11 but does not cut it for a professional job like a doctor.

Yeah but like is it that hard just to wait for a day?..

Sometimes it is for me. I don't typically call DRs on vacation, b/c in general I make sure I am up-to-date with all refills before pdoc goes away. IF I ever need something, usually one DR of my general DRs is in the office (they don't take off on vacation all at once), and they'd cover for me for at least for the amount needed until pdoc got back.
