Scalp sores, flaking, itchiness... wtf?

Recommended Posts

The topic of the post says it all... I am having issues with my scalp. I get little zit-like sores that itch and burn like the dickens, and so much flaking that I look like I've just walked in from a snowstorm. I've been using dandruff shampoo for the past six weeks or so, but there's been no improvement. I've just gone out and bought the T-Gel shampoo with the coal tar in the hopes that this will work better.

Oh, and I've also been losing hair by the fistful in the shower.

This was never a problem for me before my current cocktail (in my signature, in all its glory). I don't know exactly which drug to pin it on... Maybe Topamax? I'm honestly at my wits end and while I'm not a particularly vain person, I would like to not look like a completely disgusting mess. Has anyone else had this happen to them? What drug do you think is causing it? I know I'm taking a lot of meds so it could be any number of them or interactions between them.

If this T-Gel shampoo doesn't work, I guess I'll have to ask my GP for a prescription shampoo. Then I'll have one more prescription to put on my list. I'm just so frustrated by how awful the flaking and itching is, I don't know what to do. Any comments are appreciated.

Hmm, maybe it is a rash from the topa? It does sound like an anti-convulsant, although to be honest, I have never had either the scalp problem or the loss of hair. But how long have you been on it, I don't see it in your signature (I may be missing it because I am a spaz)? And there's always the possibility that it is something unrelated. If your pdoc can't account for it, maybe you could go see a dermatologist?

Oh, and the really gentle soap that dermatologists like is cetaphil. Maybe wash your hair with that for a bit?

I've been on 200mg/day of Topamax for about 3 months now. Since I started the Topamax I've also gotten acne on my face and back in a pretty severe fashion, so I'm thinking maybe the red itchy bumps on my scalp could be another acne-type thing caused by the Topamax?

It appears that this drug doesn't want me to be pretty ever again. :( I'm going to give the T-Gel a good try and then see if my GP wants to send me to a dermatologist.

My dermatologist prescribed Desonide 0.05% for my facial flaking and ketoconazole 2% shampoo for my blistering flaking scalp. They work. I just have to use them forever.

Of course there is no proof these skin conditions were caused by any of the medications I have taken or am taking.
