Recently I have been introduced to monster energy drink...I love it. Though I get a bit of a crash after but I still love it. I have abused caffeine in the past, having too much and for the wrong reasons (to physically make me too jittery to harm myself or others) but that was a year ago and I have moved on.

What i'm trying to say is are energy drinks and AD's ok to mix? Are they a bad combo or indifferent?

I've done some research online and some websites say yes and others no so I'm left wondering.

I'm thinking it isn't a very good idea. Especially if you're prone to anxiety or have blood pressure issues. Also, if you're like me, adding in any more chemicals to my body isn't something I want to be doing.

I did some digging around and found a few places that talk about it:

I'll be honest. When I first started looking into this I though it wasn't too big of a deal. After doing some research, I'd say don't do it.

Thanks for your responses, I'll try to hold up on the energy drinks for a while and will ask my pdoc about them. I naively didn't realise that they contained any vitamins but looking on the can, under the ingredients, it has the percentages, One is as high as 40% of something in just a 250ml can!

I think they'd definetely be something to avoid if you have anxiety, or if your depression tends to come with insomnia or agitation. If you aren't seeing your p-doc for awhile and want to ask about them, you might want to ask your CPN (or psychiatric nurse equivalent if you're not in the UK.) They're sometimes very knowledgable about stuff like this. Wishing you well.

I used to drink one energy drink a day. Me with my anxiety problems! And I wouldn't get jittery from just one can, but I did have a lot more anxiety and still not enough energy (my whole life I've never had energy, it seems). So energy drink + anxiety = bad. If you don't suffer from anxiety, they shouldn't hurt you but like everyone else is saying, ask your doctor first.

I have heard on the news recently that the Monster drinks have caused heart arrhythmia/deaths because the amount of caffeine in it. One of the people I think drank like maybe 2-3, but however many it was (it wasnt many) they compared it to being the same amount of caffeine in 12, 12-ounce bottles of coca cola. It is being looked into, but not taken off the shelves. I *think* you could google it and the info about it come up. I haven't, just heard it on the news.

I used to somewhat abuse energy drinks, especially when I was on Adderall and smoking, which I think all contributed to part of my psychotic break. But when I got put on Wellbutrin, when I would have an energy drink, I'd feel like I was going to have a heart attack or pass out. It doesn't happen anymore, but I still get headaches when I mix them sometimes

I don't think the combination is something to worry about, but I think that caffeine is an easily abusable substance due to its availability and lack of regulation. As long as you're not consuming so much caffeine that you're feeling jittery or more anxious than usual as a result, I'd say it's fine, but if it has a negative affect on your mood overall, try to lower your consumption. I used to drink absurd quantities of caffeine to the point that I'd have frequent heart palpitations and didn't even give a shit, but I've learned from that period of my life after realizing how anxious and hyper-vigilant it was making me. I'm definitely addicted to caffeine and probably drink about 4 or 5 8-ounce cups of coffee a day, but that's less than half (closer to a third) as much as I used to consume. I feel way better nowadays but definitely still MUST have a couple cups of coffee to help me start my day, or else I'm a complete wreck where my brain just feels all over the place. I love stimulants though so all of this may apply more to me personally than the majority of others - I'm not sure.

I've found, at least for me that the energy drinks don't make me jittery, or anything of the sort, however I have found that the crash feels 10 times worse than before I started taking AD's. I'm on effexor XR 75mg. I've decided to stray away from energy drinks for the fear of simply falling asleep at the wrong time like while sitting in traffic for instance
