confused
Mitt Romney said the 47% that don't pay taxes will vote for Obama so he has to sway the independents. Who are the 47%? I'm thinking the poor and disabled? That number seems so high.
StormBeforeCalm
These graphics from the Washington Post illustrate where the 47% (or 46%) come from. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/politics/tax-reality-check/notax.html?hpid=z2

tryp
One of my (very very distant) FB friends' post just came up in my newsfeed: "I am the 53% - thanks for supporting me, Mitt". And the worst part is - I don't think it was sarcastic... I am very glad I don't live in the US right now...
bpladybug
the working poor who pay employment taxes, but don't earn enough to pay federal income taxes plus they pay sales taxes and user fees, etc, etc the elderly on social security the disabled low income children student and young people who earn too little to owe taxes the unemployeed who try and try and try to find a job in this recessionary economy oddly enough because I am self employeed and must pay both self employment tax and federal tax I am in a MUCH higher tax bracket than Mitt Romeny, who pays only 13%. There are so many loop holes for the wealthy plus advantages to Swiss and Cayman Island bank accounts. and those on Veterans Benefits of course those are some of the 47%

Antigone
You know who relies entirely on the US government for food, healthcare, and shelter and gets huge federal tax breaks or pays no federal tax at all? US troops serving in combat zones. You tell them Mitt! What have those lazy fucks done for America lately?I'm one of those lazy fucks, too. On the dole after 32 years of paying into disability, I have the gall to actually collect on that insurance program after one application, two appeals, 400+ pages of medical records, facing a an administrative law judge and trial, and a two year wait that would have bankrupted most people. Lazy fuck I am. Victimy, too.

bpladybug
Mitt's stupid, insensitive statements are blowing up on him CNN was running the video of his speech every 30 mins MSNBC is having a field day We are finally getting to know the real Mitt Romney, behind his pleasant facade. Thank goodness, I am so glad this happened. His audience was a $50,000 a plate fundraising dinner. The video of this speech and comments was taken from the side. Once wonders if it was a wait staff, caterer, busboy, or Chef who filmed it.
Antigone
I'd be really interested in knowing how the camera was hidden in a piece of furniture, as they said. The Secret Service protects Mittens these days because he is the Republican nominee. They are extremely zealous. They xray and take out walls when they want to for security reasons, drill holes, all kinds of shit. (My first husband helped elect Clinton and was the number one fundraiser for Al Gore in 2000. I've been to $50,000 a plate dinners and seen what they do to those folks houses!). The timing of this could not be better. Most folks will make up their minds in the next four to five weeks, and many will vote absentee starting in early to mid October. I gleefully hope it was planned to drop at this moment. You couldn't get a better cycle for it. Plus, just wait for the new ads from the Obama camp, et al. They will have a field day with it. ALL of their air time will go to attack ads and Romney will be spending all his money on ads trying to defend what he said. And I'd say Florida is no longer in play with all the lazy fuck retirees who get Social Security that they paid for. Virginia is probably out of play now, too, and Mittens can't win without it unless he nails Pennsylvania and Ohio. Colorado may be his last refuge. We shall see! bpladybug
Antigone, from what I saw on CNN and what the broadcasters said the camera was probably a phone, and it was sitting on a table, probably an 8 top or 10 top if you are used to banquets. There was no one else at the table and we could not see the operator. It was very interesting. The audio was EXCELLENT but the visual was of the side of the podium, at least 20 feet back. I guess you met Clinton and know Gore rather well. So, did Bill Clinton kiss you on the cheek? do tell
Guest
Over here we definitely have a rhetoric about the deserving and the undeserving poor. More money is lost in the welfare system through error than it is through fraud, but the department for work and pensions leaks the worst fraud cases to the media and so a perception is a created that the welfare system is abused far more than it is. Cuts have hit to disabled, the poor and the disadvantaged, many people who had a chance of climbing out of poverty and crime are now stuck and castigated. We have had many suicides over the way people have been treated. We haven't had a rhetoric like this since the Victorian times, when workhouses existed, indeed forced labor is coming back. The 47%, if they weren't too ground down by suffering to vote, would be a powerful ally. That's the irony. The people I work with in my town are actually tenacious, with strong values and morals, just because they take heroin or live on the streets, it doesn't mean they don't hunger for something better. If someone could take the time to relate to them in a way that was politically effective, they could change things.
melissaw72
I think it's so easy for people like Mitt to stigmatise the poor and disadvantaged, because they don't have the power to fight back. Which is a pretty lowly thing to do, to kick people when they're down. Plus Mitt hasn't experienced anything but a privileged life from everything I have heard about him, so he cant see beyond that.. Probably can't even comprehend it.

Probably can't even comprehend it. I agree with you both. Being disabled, and my sole source of income SSDI, I tire of being characterized as not contributing anything to society. What does Mitt think I do with my SSDI? Have a bonfire every month and burn the money? My income supports: my landlord; utility companies; the grocery store; pharmacies; my doctor; and credit card companies. And Medicare. News flash, Mitt. Medicare ain't free. I pay for it, even now. Every month, my SSDI goes right back into the economy. Mitt isn't the only one slinging the word "entitlement" around. Google Paul Ryan + James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. In 2010, Ryan complained that the Zadroga act encouraged a sense of entitlement to (more comprehensive) medical care for 9/11 victims, and first responders. Retromancer
The Republican party truly has become Ayn Rand's party. Read the infamous tunnel scene in 'Atlas Shrugs' to see what they have planned for us "moochers" and "parasites": "These passengers were awake; there was not a man aboard the train who did not share one or more of their ideas. As the train went into the tunnel, the flame of Wyatt's Torch was the last thing they saw on earth." - Ayn Rand, "Atlas Shrugged", p566-

Antigone
He laughed. He was three hours late to a cocktail reception we were throwing, and I was three sheets to the wind by then. He put his arm around me to kiss my cheek and I just let my hand drift down for a little squeeze. lol Then I dragged him off behind a curtain to get him to write a get well card to my godson and the Secret Service flipped their shit. THAT was funny! I only hauled him there because we were about to be mobbed by our guests and I needed him to get the card done. My godson still has the card!
