gizmo
Not anywhere else! I will have a window open that I'm typing in. I will listen to the instructor, use the touchpad to move the cursor, and the whole program freezes! I've tried repairing office and uninstalling/reinstalling office. I keep the USB thing for my mouse plugged in all the time (even though I don't use the mouse at school). Could that cause problems? Also, I put my computer in sleep mode when transporting it from home to school - should I be turning it off completely? I use my home's wifi at home, and connect to the school's wifi at school, though I don't use it once class begins. I can go from typing in word for two hours straight at home (with long breaks in between) with no freezing to 5 freezes in 15 minutes in my classroom! I'm about ready to install Word 2007 on the computer, but I heard it doesn't play well with windows 7. Any ideas?
Eden
Well it would be better to put it in hibernate or turn it off altogether yes. Sleep is like hitting pause, hibernate is basically turning off the computer but writing everything you are doing onto the hard drive so you can resume when you turn it on. It wouldn't explain the situational crashes though, if there were damage it would do that all the time. I doubt the wifi could cause a crash with a program that doesn't use the internet. Question, do you plug your laptop in at school? That might make a difference as with the cord in laptops use energy at will but with no plug some of them lose a bit of processing power. Word might be crashing because that little bit of difference is just enough to overwhelm your computer. If it's a relatively new laptop I would say this is basically an impossibility, but if it's pretty outdated I would call it an... unlikely cause but possible. Also, do you study in the bermuda triangle? Or...... near a very large magnet?... probably not.... I don't know I'm somewhat stumped. Try using it at home without the plug in if you can't plug it in at school.
gizmo
I will try shutting down the computer before I head off to school and see if it makes a difference. I don't plug in my computer at school, but I just bought the computer about three weeks ago, and it's a near top of the line computer in terms of processor and RAM. So I don't think that might make a difference. Plus, I've typed notes on my computer using the battery in my house before and not had this problem. So maybe all that it is is that I need to turn off the computer before driving to school.
Kodos
Also google "Word 2010 freezes" to get a lot of other ideas on things to check.
Eden
Drivers? New computers are often shipped with horribly outdated drivers, especially in the case of some particular brands. ....Edit: that wouldn't make sense either.
water
Don't connect to the wireless at school. Turn off your connection. I know it doesn't make sense for that to bother Word, but there seems to be nothing different elsewhere. Don't replace Word if it is working at home, you could still have the same problem at school with the new Word. It sounds like the problem is not with Word if it works fine at home. also, use the mouse at school, don't use the touchpad. Or try using the touchpad at home. Duplicate the environment exactly at school with what works at home. Computers sometimes are quirky. The other thing I would try is opening up the laptop NEAR school, or somewhere else outside of home. See if it works there.
San
Try an uninstall and reinstall.
Eden
She did san, water makes a good point, I can't say it makes sense to me but nothing does, the wifi really is the only factor.
gizmo
I will make sure to not connect to the wifi when I go back to school on Monday. Hopefully that will fix it , along with turning the computer completely off before taking it to school. I'll let you know how it goes!
