MrCrazyPants
Been taking klonopin prn and it works well the only problem is I get depressed after taking it. Maybe cause it's too long acting. I'm thinking of switching to ativan for prn, any suggestions for alternatives? Xanax made me feel weird so I think that one is out.
dancesintherain
It's really a trial and error, I think. The idea is to go w/ what your pdoc recommends of course...usually they're making educated guesses based on how things have gone before. Ativan is supposed to be one of the quick-acting ones, so it seems logical to try it. But two bad reactions to two different benzos would make me cautious. eldorado
I've got a script for both. Mostly I use ativan for sleep and kolopine if I know that something stressful is likely to happen later. If i'm in the middle of a shit storm I didn't see coming, I take 100mg of Seroquel
Wooster
Lorazepam (ativan) worked ok as a prn for me.
crtclms
I use my husband's ativan (my pdoc knows, I promise) when I have a killer headache, because it relaxes tension in your neck and scalp, and it works pretty quickly and effectively. It doesn't cure the headache, but it quickly makes me way more comfortable. I take xanax daily, and have a 1mg prn as well. It works not as quickly, but fairly fast. It doesn't help me with headaches at all, for what that is worth.
melissaw72
I have just recently weaned off xanax, and it didn't help with headaches either. It actually made a headache worse at times. Worked quickly if I put it under my tongue. However, if I put it under my tongue for me it was instant help to alleviate anxiety, I just felt it help my head relax. If I swallowed it though, with food too, it acts more like it calms me down in general. Idk why, just does with me.
Mirazh
I do clonazepam under my tongue for a prn. I don't get the depression though, just calms me. Takes about 20min to hit, could be too long for some, I don't know. Only other benzo I tried was Valium, which had me even more anxious and agitated. g8orgirl
I take Ativan prn, I know in most psych hospitals it's the benzo that's used most commonly this way. I chills me out pretty quick when my anxiety is bad.
Energizerhoney
I've got a script for both. Mostly I use ativan for sleep and kolopine if I know that something stressful is likely to happen later. If i'm in the middle of a shit storm I didn't see coming, I take 100mg of Seroquel Wow. Are you able to stay awake with that much Seroquel? I take 200mg daily and it knocks me the hell out. My pdoc said I could take extra for anxiety, but I'd fall asleep at work or while driving lol
Energizerhoney
Xanax Made really depressed after I took it, plus ,I didn't like how it made me feel. For me Klonopin works great. I've tried Valium before and liked it s well. I guess, like all these ridiculous meds, you just gotta try them and see. Maybe your pdoc can give you some samples of different ones to try? You'll know pretty much right away which ones work and which ones you dislike.

My pdoc said I could take extra for anxiety, but I'd fall asleep at work or while driving lol When It comes to BP, I am massively on the manic side. Just about the only time I experience depression is when I'm crashing from a mania. When I start to drift into the hypo side, I instantly get a lot of other symptoms, and my first resort is benzo. I know when its time for Seroquel prn when I can eat benzos like tic-tacs and not feel a thing. For me, staying out of even the shallow end of hypo is extremely important. Also one of my earliest warning signs is lots of energy, drowsiness becomes non existent, I've got a script for both. Mostly I use ativan for sleep and kolopine if I know that something stressful is likely to happen later. For me Seroquel is a magic bullet. Yes, its a nasty drug and I loath taking it. But I''ve been on it a decade and it still works. I first started doing it on my own and saw immediate results, so I got together with my pdoc and we have worked out a plan and set perimeters. If needed, I can call in for an extra order at his office and it will be at the pharmacist within 24 hrs. And if I don't call him back, it is sign that it worked and that we can stop worrying about me being in immediate danger.
TommyK
I would think for "rescue" type benzo's there is nothing better than Xanax or Ativan. FYI, Klonopin comes in dissolvible wafers that work VERY quickly, about twice as fast for me as the regular tablets. I would make sure you can get the Roche brand though, they are far superior to Barr. Also, alprazolam(Xanax) comes in a wafer form too called Niravem.
