Recommended Posts

hi guys...i've been on remeron since 2002 on 60 mg. of generic....just upped it ta 75 mg as of the end of july. never had a problem before now!!!

started having joint pain a couple days after upping it! bursitis is what the docs say...which is swelling of the bursa that helps your joints ta move smoothly...

all i know is it HURTS LIKE HELL!!!  ;)   i'm 30 n feel like i'm 80!!!

anyways i was wondering if anyone else has had this or other problems on remeron and how severe?

any comments or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hi flutterfly

I've taken Remeron before. Mainly for sleep and general anxiety. I think I went as high as 45-60 at one point. Most of the time usually 30 mg for sleep. No s/e except for sedation (which I wanted) and some major weight gain (40 lbs), which I've yet to lose. That was at least 6 months ago. That's why I quit. My first suggestion is to drop back down to 60 mg! Why did you increase to 75 in the first place? And why now, 3 months later, are you getting side effects? I'd get on the phone to the doc and find out what's going on! But you already did I see. What are they telling you? I don't know much about bursitis but it sounds painful. Hope you're able to work it out!

John

That's a HUGE dose.  According to the PDR and rxlist the max recommended dose is 45mgs.  Not many studies have been done with the kind of dose you're on right now.  You're a lab rat at this point.  Tell your doc about your side effects.  Maybe then he'll know better than to put anyone else on that kind of dose.

Have you tried high-dose SSRIs?  That might be a better bet.

The new GABA analog that just came out, the one that is supposed to replace Neurontin might also be worth looking at.  The name escapes me right now.  It starts with an L

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Elvis,

Do you mean Lyrica?

I don't know much about it.

Flutterfly:

Are you taking any other meds for your problems?

It's unusual to see Remeron being used as a front-line med. It's usually part of a combo or a cocktail. I didn't find Remeron all that great for anxiety myself. For a while I was taking it with Cymbalta and Neurontin. In the end I had to go to a benzo, in my case Valium to deal with the anxiety issues.

It's all well and good that your pdoc doesn't believe in benzos, but there comes a time... I spent 5 months trying everything under the sun to deal with my anxiety. Because I didn't want to take any benzo's. At this point I'm on 300 mg Effexor and hardly ever use the valium. You need a good SSRI or SNRI, and a benzo at least while you're adjusting to the new meds.

I did the GABA analogues, BuSpar, the Atypicals, nothing helped. I agree with Elvis you should get on a good SSRI like Prozac for starters, along with a Benzo like Klonopin and work from there.

Jafco

PS If your pdoc is a benzophobic find youself a new doc if necessary.

Well I'll join you in having that beer. I'm working on a Coors Gold as we speak. Love my beer! Here's to your health!

I mean that. I hope everything works out. Your right, It may have nothing to with the Remeron. Go see the Orthopedist or whomever and get yourself looked at by a specialist!

I have been on Remeron for almost a month and a half and the sore joints sound pretty familiar I also get strange muscle cramps, like walking on the golf course and my calf muscle starts to do jumping jacks.  The other thing I noticed is lower stomach pains, close to the left hip that started a week or so after I started the Remeron.  Mind you it could be a combo of all the drugs I am on.

Take care

Miller light here.  I'm broke.

90mgs is a seriously insane remeron dose.  I've never heard of anyone taking anything close to that and I've been hanging out in forums like this off and on for years.  I''ve never seen anything in published studies either.

I'd go for a second opinion if I were you.

Remeron, loved it's sedating quality for sleep but ouch!!!  Shortly after starting it I started having all kinds of aches and pains, muscles and joints both.  And the doctor mentioned bursitis at one point too.  I think the weight gain also added to the pain as my formerly small body couldn't handle the excess baggage.

hey guys...thanks so much for your insights....

yep v.e. i now officially feel like a lab rat!!!  ;)   he has told me he has heard of people going upta 160mg!

i will talk to him 'bout the ssri's he suggested it a while ago but with having bad reactions to paxil i declined...so i might as well suck it up n try another (i'm already his rat)!!!

Flutterfly, while I was on Remeron I somehow managed to also screw up my right shoulder.  I have no recall of doing anything to strain or jar it but over a period of time it began to feel very much like when I had torn my left rotator cuff the year before.  I doubt much of that was caused by the evil remeron but the other body aches and pains, hands, feet, hips, etc.  went away after I quit it.  But now I am not on any AD which sucks cause most of them, remeron included have helped with my IBS and now it has flared up again.

I want an AD that doesn't cause pain, rather helps with it.  I know they are out there but I am not having much luck right now.  Cymbalta is supposed to be good for that but is not available in Canada.

Wishing you well, and good luck with whatever you try next.  Sulu

Hi Flutterfly,

I was on Remeron (by itself) for quite awhile for anxiety as well, but I only took 30 mg.  The only side effect I experienced was weight gain.

It's rather disconcerning when docs want to prescibe crazy meds in such high doses, well above the maximum recommended dosage.  There are no clinical trials at these exceeded dosages, so who knows what new side effects could occur?

Remeron rules as a sleeping aid, but maybe you should ask your doc about lowering the dose and adding an SSRI or maybe Effex in the mornings.  Remeron alone also crapped out on me after awhile for anxiety.

I hope you're feeling better honey.

For a week after I started taking Remeron (started at 30 mg and have stayed at that dose) I had terrible lower back pain. I thought it was just the crap beds at the hospital but it sven hurt after sleeping on my bed at home. It stopped after a week/week and a half. My doctor said it was normal.
