NykkiLeigh
My psychiatrist keeps increasing my dosage and now I am up to 10 mg two times a day. It makes me EXTREMELY hungry ALL THE FUCKING TIME! And now because of it, I am gaining a lot of weight and GAH! I'm trying to diet my way through it, but this still sucks. Anyone else having this problem? Anybody overcome it? Guest
Yep. I've had the same problem. It's a pretty common problem for all the atypical antipsychotics. The only think I've found that has helped is adding Metformin. Metformin is a medication that is usually used for people that are diabetic. I am curious about dosing Abilify twice a day. With the long half-life of Abilify dosing once a day is more typical. Actually, my pdoc wrote my prescription for twice a day and the insurance company wouldn't let me fill it that way. He then wrote it for me to take two 10 mg tablets once per day and they'd fill it but taking it twice a day, they wouldn't approve.
Dusk
I became diabetic because of Abilify and I gained sooooo much weight. The medicine did me a lot of good for a long time though. It lost effectiveness and I quit it last year.
Parapluie
Yes, I have experienced this. I am on 30mg of Abilify and it makes me extremely hungry when I change dosages. I've gained weight because of it.
CookieN
I tried to take Abilify twice, but gave me horrible side effects. So the experience I am going to describe is with zyprexa and not abilify. Zyprexa made me extremely hungry, I gained 44 lbs in a month. I became even more depressed because the way I looked. Years later I went to my family doctor, and she found I had become insulin resistant and prescribed metformin. With no effort, I started to lose weight, and months later I was skinny again. The cravings went away. To find if you are insulin resistant there is a test called Glucose tolerance test (2 hours). It measures your glucose and insulin after taking a glucose drink. It is always useful to do some lab/blood tests to see what is going on in your body to cause the weight gain. Another thing that may contribute to weight gain is hypothyroidism. There is also a test for it. Good luck! My psychiatrist keeps increasing my dosage and now I am up to 10 mg two times a day. It makes me EXTREMELY hungry ALL THE FUCKING TIME! brokenchina
Yes, I had that problem with both Abilify and risperidone; got taken off of both because I've gained 70lbs in the past 1.5 years...
6o9o6
I'm on it again - I haven't taken it yet, but I remember when I first took it I felt nauseous... But now I'm just gonna have to suck it up & wait for the side effects to go away. XD
