Life insurance for people with MI?

Recommended Posts

I tried to pick up some additional life insurance and am being denied because of the meds i am on coupled with my bpII dx.

Anyone else have this happen? Can you do anything about? Are there any insurance companies out there that will cover you? And if so do they charge a reasonable premium?

Yes, there might be a carrier which will write you.  One factor is whether there are references to suicide in your doctor's records.  Or attempts of course.

What you need is a highly experienced insurance broker who has access to a variety of carriers, and who has experience writing policies which are considered 'high risk'.

There are wholesalers who specialize in high risk.  I work with one myself.   A really good agent can help you with this.  Any further questions you should PM me please.

I have life insurance through my husband's work and we have successfully been able to increase it.It's not nearly as much as his is, and they had him fill out a little health questionnaire, but no questions on mine yet. Now I kinda worry about getting my own through a job..hmm...

Thank you for the responses. I didnt think about a broker. I can let them wade through all of the companies and their stipulations. Amd its good to know that i can still get some.

I just kind of freaked out. It was a blow because i have successfully managed to make it 18 years with a bp dx and have been, mostly, med compliant so it was a WTF moment.

I had to wait until the company I work for changed insurance carriers.  When they changed carriers they essentially canceled all the old policies and had to open up the new insurance for all employees.  I've been waiting for years for them to do this.  At least 15 years.  They finally did and I got insurance through my company.  I've never been able to find insurance any other way--just through my employer and only during the period when everyone can get insurance.  If I'd tried to go through my company at any other time than the initial startup, I would not qualify.

I have not tried to get insurance through a broker that specializes in high risk.  I think this would be the way to go if you can't qualify through your employer.

I don't understand this. Isn't life insurance null and void if death is due to suicide? BPs have a much higher mortality rate but that rate is due to suicide. So why would we be higher risk? Or does US insurance pay out with suicide as well?

I think the suicide clause is variable depending on the company in the US. My husband and I have life insurance that we got when first married, he wants to look at rates but I'm afraid I'd be turned down, plus we were in our twenties like 15 years ago. I doubt we will get much cheaper rates than that. We do both have suicide clauses due to his OCD and my risk of depression (at the time). I wasn't even diagnosed with bipolar/schizoaffective yet.

When my husband committed suicide when he was a med student, his insurance paid out.  There was a two year clause (he had to have the life insurance for two years) and then suicide was covered.  Also, group insurance through an employer is generally open to everyone with limited health questions asked.

Thats just it. I get if the rates would be higher for the suicide risk but they flat out refused me coverage. And im even finding it difficult to just get accidental death and dismemberment. There is obviously a suicide clause in it. I guess if i get hit by a semi truck or shot in a movie theater my family doesn't deserve to be protected. Gaahhh...

I have however enlisted a broker and am waiting to hear something.
