Hagar, that video is so hilarious.   Poor guy.

He was fired right after this.    (I read about it ..... I guess he was trying to pronounce the name of the London Marathon winner before he went on air, and he got frustrated.)

Women's institute members dress up for fun, for a talk on "piracy"...

Only it turns out not to be on the history of Devon Pirates,

rather one on the personal experience of being held hostage by Somali ones.

Thank goodness it wasn't in Cornwall, but we'm always known Deb'n folk be a bit odd.

Condescended to, much?

Trouble is, there is truth.

This connects, but is a bit long.  A regular Skype contact in Russia was showing me some card kits he was making.  They looked quite impressive, and I wondered if they could be obtained outside Russia, or sent from Russia)

(One source, to date. http://russia-best.com/category/architecture-card-model/ )

Finding the full  Russian site for UMBUM  (short for "clever paper"  in Russian) and using Chrome's browser translator,

I found hundreds of glue free kits,  http://umbum.ru/

And, finally arriving back on topic, discovered that they even have a section for girls, featuring some nice simple kits in pretty colours.

http://umbum.ru/category/for-girls/

I am tempted by Neuschwanstein castle or a Russian cathedral

neuschwanstein1_enl.jpg

But I suspect these, despite being intended for Russian kids, are beyond my current capability

I've not really found their like in the UK, Europe or USA, on a Google.

I may find out what the postage is, from that site which specializes in exporting from Russia.

For the  simple kits, "Average ages: 3 - 12 y.o., but actually no limits to be a fan of."

Middle complexity "from 6-16"

"NO NEED GLUE OR SCISSORS!"

I wonder whether the nintendo generation at those ages would actually be able to cope!

I think that castle is beautiful! I'd love a kit like that. :) It might be difficult but it would be a fun challenge.

There's always this stuff: Exin castles, or Exin Castillos

Like Lego, but it only makes castles.

But, as ever, some people get carried away:   http://tinyurl.com/c4xc33t

Exin (originally Spanish) also did a rarer wild west series,

and a number "Tente" ranges including two which only made model ships, either merchant marine or naval warships

(I shouldn't admit to knowing this stuff, should I?)

Ouch: just had a quick look for Exin on eBay USA: rare and expensive "collector's prices".

Much cheaper from Ebay's in Europe, especially Spain, but also France, Netherlands, if you can negotiate postage.

No need for glue or scissors?  Hard to believe. I would love to try one.  I am a bit over the middle complexity age. :-}

Did you find out about shipping?

Did you find out about shipping?

Yes. steep.  A bit better of you are prepared to  wait for non-air mail.  USA may be better placed?   I did go for one mid range kit, ( I need easy distractions)  This one: http://russia-best.com/product/hunting-castle-card-model-kit/

Their basket and checkout lets you see final postage  before you commit.

In the UK there is a limit if £15.00 on imports that don't attract customs duty and VAT (at 20%) so I couldn't try for a big order to work the postage better.

The thinner card kits may be better for weight.

I couldn't see any retailer who has already imported them in bulk.

Found some superb Japanese building kits at ridiculous cost, and some nice free download-and-print-out ones, but they require mounting onto to card-stock, cutting out and gluing, never mind the ink and paper cost.

A nice little low-demand Google.

The main problem is is avoiding all the "craft" sites selling pre-packaged card-making kits, rather than kits made from card!

OK, I just got weirded out.

Still innocently dabbling with "3D Castles" etc on eBay,

and getting some incredible price variations, and quality from rubbish to nothing special,

and then suddenly these are in front of me: http://tinyurl.com/brdwp8b

Definitely weird, and unfortunately seemingly true.

Chris.
