Rising Goddess
Hello! I'm reading more and more that smoking is a bad idea for MI consumers, but I'm addicted to the smoking, NOT the nicotine (I've recently gone 3 weeks without a cigarette or patch by choice while hospitalized)... at least I think I'm not. Anyhow, I'm thinking that I'll just switch to e-cigs, but I've noticed a disclaimer on all the brands that they are not recommended for people taking meds for depression. I've researched the ingredients in these things and it's just propylene glycol, an everyday household agent used in everything like shampoos and cosmetics, so the warning has to be for the nicotine. Right? Does anyone use e-cigarettes here? Any side effects (besides awesomeness)?
Eden
It's easy to over indulge with an e-cig, I don't find it to be anywhere near as satisfying, not at all enough, but I managed to more than quadruple my daily consumption of nicotene. Maybe the ability to abuse it is what brings that up? I don't know, I don't see it as all that dangerous.. hell not at all
The Emperor
I used them for almost three years to not smoke. Yeah, I ended up smoking again, but they were very good for a while. It was only once I'd quit the e-cigs that I actually started smoking again. I know a shit ton about them and I couldn't rave about them more, really. They were great for me. My problem was the "oh, I always smoke after/before this! Wait, no I don't!" thing that got me into them. The habit, right? That was the big issue for me. I ended up ordering the best e-cigs on the market. While they don't look like cigarettes in the slightest, it still helped. Just not in public, hence me starting again. I made my own liquid, all that. It was way cheaper! They worked well for me. I can help, if you want them and you need help. BTW, I am bipolar with who knows what anxiety disorders. Didn't make me personally any worse for wear. It went rather smoothly. I love them. I recommend the e-cigs to all my friends. They really were awesome. I have no idea why I'm smoking again! Dammit! Kaashii
My other half and his dad both gave up smoking in favor of the e-cigs. Neither of them suffer from an MI, so I can't say much about the effects they may or may not have on depression, but they pretty much swear by the things. They're all big into making their own juices and rebuilding their own systems and all of that, and maybe that's a part of the reason they enjoy it too - they don't get the backlash from the rest of us for smoking cigarettes, plus they get to fiddle with gadgets and chemicals and whatnot. His dad actually smokes just flavored juices, not even with nicotine in them - he was more in it for the habit, so now he has a less harmful way to indulge that and keep him a little less stressed. I really don't know a whole lot about them other than the few times my other half and I got into debates over the pharmacological effects of them and helping him concoct a few different flavors of juices, but the advice I know he gives to people is to stay clear of those online sites that claim to give them to you for FREE* and the asterisk means they'll start hammering your plastic for overpriced crap until you tell them to stop. He also seems to steer people away from the ones available at places like gas stations and Wal-mart because they're crappy and wind up being one of those "Well, this isn't going to work" things because they don't perform very well, so they give the impression that the whole e-cig thing doesn't do jack shit. (Not sure whether he's correct or way off on that - I'm sure The Emperor would probably be able to give better advice in that respect!)
San
I hated e-cigs. When I quit I had one but didn't bother charging it after a couple of days because it did nothing for me. (Actually, none of the quit smoking aids helped me at all, they just made me angry) I was very stuck on a brand name and menthol, and if I couldn't replicate it, I hated smoking. I wouldn't even bum a smoke off someone if I didn't have mine unless it was menthol. I was a weird smoker. I was also a habitual/boredom and stress smoker, so breaking those habits was the worst. AnneMarie
If you are not addicted to the nicotine, break the habit instead. Cigs of any sort really are bad for you. Says former smoker who smoked for many, many years until said cigarettes caused required bypass surgery. It's not just lung cancer that can kill you. BasketofPuppies
After some internet research it seems that it is not the medication interaction but the effect of nicotine on people with depressive disorders is the problem. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/708406_5 Nicotine supposedly exacerbates depression. KillBytes
Vaping is pretty satisfying if you can simulate the throat hit, head rush and cloud of smoke, which I crave. Most people who try ecigs run back to tobacco in a week because the more common ecigs you find in gas stations and mini marts suck. I strongly suggest buying a real vaping device with variable voltage. For the eliquids you can experiement until u find what flavors u like. I personally do not like candy flavored or food flavored liquids. I buy tobacco flavored and the strongest nicotine I can find, never lower then 26mg and 36 when ever possible. With a real vaping device you can simulate the throat head, head rush and cloud of smoke. I vaped for about 2 years excusively no tobacco. I recently went back to tobacco because nothing beats the real thing, but vaping does come close.
Stickler
I know this came up before, but I want to get my GF a vape kit, can someone recommend one? Research seems to show nicotine helps depression, what little has been done. http://psychcentral.com/news/2006/09/12/nicotine-as-an-antidepressant/258.html Edited August 5, 2014 by Stickler
KillBytes
you get the most bang for the buck from a eGo, I would get the variable voltage battery.
catflapjack0
Ecigs are awesome. I've been on them since Dec 2010. Smoked a carton since then perhaps, instead of a carton a week. But daily use is ecig. Don't get the stupid cigalikes, the VV or VW battery or a 'mod' is what you want. Google Madvapes for a good inexpensive store.
