Akasthesia/Restless can't sleep

Recommended Posts

I no longer take AAP's, but for some reason lately when I try to go to sleep and I'm lying still I am having the worst akasthesia. This tremendous energy builds up in my body and I have to move to make it go away. And it wakes up my mate who has been getting crappy sleep lately too, and she's got finals this week and needs to sleep well.

Any ideas? I've tried breathing exercises, I've tried keeping my feet moving back and forth, I've tried just staying completely still and powering through it.. nothing helps. I don't know how I eventually end up falling asleep.

This just started a few nights ago. Its driving me crazy. I just can't lie still! Argh!!

Did anything in your meds change? AAPs aren't the only meds that can cause akathesia.

Regardless of med changes, talk to your pdoc. He may have a useful suggestion. There also are meds to counter akathesia. How well they work for you is trial and error.

Benadryl helps me a little. You could try that. Otherwise, sorry, I have no useful suggestions for dealing with it in the moment. I have to get up and move, lie down and try to sleep again, get up and move, lie down and try....

Yeah I recently started Lamictal about a month ago. This week I titrate up to 100mg from 50mg. Could lamictal do it? Hmmm

I'll try the Benadryl thing and see if that helps...

The night I posted this I took another 2 Ativan (I'd already taken my daily 2mg about 8 hours earlier)

And it calmed my body and energy down enough to sleep. Before going off to bed though, I was hallucinating for a few minutes in the dark... the lights on the electronics had tracers and were racing around.. the walls were breathing in and out, the treadmill was moving up and down... the lights from outside were sparkling.. it was weird but entertaining and I just stood there a few minutes looking into the living room.
