All i'm missing is a giant rabbit named "Frank."

It's embarrassing... very much so, but since my shrink can't even seem to tell me what it is... why not ask a forum full of fellow mental patients, am I right??

Okay... this has been going on for roughly a year... and it not only scares me.. but my mom who I live with at the moment(still single ladies) who thinks that I might snap and kill her the next time it happens.

After usually being awake for weeks/months, etc... I will pass out...let's use this as an example: at my computer... right on the keyboard the last time actually... and of course I won't remember that part.. suddenly I will wake-up in a different part of the house... even outside on occasion-- and even though I am lucid, I will immediately... Impulsively-- smash my head and/or face into whichever is nearest.

I would say the worst was the bathroom mirror, but walls don't exactly tickle either. I have also fallen asleep while standing-up (Narcolepsy??) and this happened during a mild manic episode approx 2 weeks ago... I was standing near my computer desk and apparently fell asleep... the only thing that woke me-up was the very sharp edge of the desk that I landed on-- solar- plexus-first.

I have a rather large tolerance for pain.... but that was a very awkward and uncomfortable pain.

Based on what I've researched, I would have to lean toward narcolepsy; but factor in me hurling myself across the room- as if my very own little tyler durden was kicking my ass... and it seems to be something else entirely.

My Psychiatrist/Therapist are chalking this up as medication/illness side-effects. Others have seen me do that crazy shit upon awakening after a few minute pass-out... so I know it is not just a delusion.

Anybody?

I appreciate your feedback in advance.

...and no one has ordered a sleep study?

There are a few sleep disorders that actually involve one acting out in ones sleep- their brain doesn't activate the normal paralysis usually found while a person is sleeping or some such thing. I don't know [insert technical bullshit that i knew at one point but that got replaced by something about resilience and locus of control that I was reading about a couple days ago].

Anyway... yeah.

Why no sleep study?

This is like prime material for one.

I agree with Josie that you should have a sleep study done. The lack of muscle control surrounding your episodes sounds a little bit like cataplexy, but you need to be seen by a sleep specialist to determine if that's the case or not.

Good question... why haven't they ordered a sleep study? Like I said... It appears that they either don't believe me... or chalk-it-up to my bipolar. Before being diagnosed, I really didn't have that happen.

I dunno... it would be nice to be able to slap a label on it. I guess I will have to check into this on my own.

The thing is... I live in a relatively small town, and unfortunately every one knows me and my family... and yeah... I have had paranoid delusions, etc.. in the past before I was diagnosed, but this is something else entirely.

I need to get back to Los Angeles where I was before my "meltdown"... This small town thing is too negative for me.. people run away from me like i'm the Frankenstein Monster...good for my already rapidly dwindling self-esteem.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I wonder if I go to a city further away if I can procure a sleep study?? then again... medical records huh?

Probably take one look and see my diagnoses and not take me seriously. Though... legally, I would think that he would be obligated too.

Sleep studies are valid diagnostic tools to rule in or out physical and neurological causes of sleep issues before just presuming they are caused by either MI or med side effects.

I am in total agreement that you need a sleep study, and from a board certified doctor.  Find a clinic and make sure

the physicians are specialists.  You need to get to the bottom of this.  Does not sound remotely bipolar to me.

Currently, I do not. Maybe I will just get a brain scan.... rule out any tumors.... What do you think? Does this sound ANYTHING like Narcolepsy to you?/?

It is hard to tell whether it is narcolepsy or not; only your DR could tell you that.  It took over a year to diagnose me with narcolepsy.

I'm NOT saying a sleep study is not the way to go, but with me, it came back normal and I still had narcolepsy.  I'm glad I got it done though to rule out any other possible problem that neuro was looking for.
